I don't think fast autofocus can be done. With Phase contrast, you know how far in front or back the object is away from the focus plane. You can then immediately move the drive motors the correct distance.

With contrast detection, thats not possible, it will always be an iterative process, although the final image might be sharper.

If you wanted to really add $$$ to the price of a camera, a designer could add a time-of-flight sensor to the camera. That would allow the initial focus to be fast at phase contrast, at the cost of several thousand dollars and

Regarding the x100 af, here was my issue with it.

It's a take everywhere camera, but people are waiting and posing at parties because it's too slow...particularly in dim situations. Forget kids and pets, Candid shots were difficult. That's not to say it couldn't be mitigated, but the idea of the camera was a take everywhere...I shouldn't have to mitigate for that sort of money.

I don't care about af on the new fuji, so long as manual focusing isn't broken like on the x100. That said, I

I think this reflects my experience with the X100 AF. It's the quick candid shots that I often miss. It ends up being the difference b/t a photo with two people talking, looking at each other, and them noticing me and then turning and smiling at the camera. Which turns it un-candid and I might as well have taken my S95.

I do agree fw 1.11 helped. Honestly if it didn't take so long to move the focus with the mf ring I would be fine, but it feels like it takes 5-6 complete turns to go near to far (I'm sure that's an exaggeration but it feels forever compared to my legacy c/y glass).

All this talk about focus is important but the high ISO capabilities of this thing have made me a believer in that aspect of the cameras capabilities.... And there is evidence to support that via Hugo Poon...

The best way to tell if this camera lives up to the hype or not is to look at sample images and reviews. We haven’t had any real reviews yet, however Hugo Poon’s images on Flickr have been a good indicator for me that this camera excels at high ISOs. He has samples of images from 2500 to 6400 ISO. They are all quite sharp to be shot at those ISOs.

I shoot with a 5DMKII and L glass and im not so sure that I could get that level of sharpness at ISO 3200 with it. Perhaps I am wrong but if anything these images would be comparable to anything the 5DMKII could do at ISO 3200.

With my 5DMKII I notice a loss of sharpness at high ISOs and a good deal of noise…

I went searching for similar images to the POON shots from 5DMKII shooters. All shot at ISO 3200 all at night all of similar locations.

See for yourself…

Someone I know was complaining about the AF of the Nex5 being way behind that of his old Canon 450D. CDAF has a long way to go in terms of speed, even if accuracy may be superior, so I too don't think it's specific to the X100.

Yeah, I don't use AF on the Nex cameras at all, although their CDAF is somewhere in the middle of the pack. The new Fuji will have to have the best CDAF out there for me to consider it.

That would be complex I think. For detection of more than one point, it would require some pretty complex technology sound wave shaping. Even with a single point, you need to focus the sound... seems tricky.

Off the topic on focusing, I currently have a Nex-5 and Contax G lenses. Is it wrong to say that I absolutely love the rendering of these things, and that the Fuji example don't have any of the same magic? I really really hope the someone will have an adapter for there abandoned lenses for the X Pro1 ready for the official release date.

The NEX AF is actually the fast I've seen for APS-C live view style CD AF. Although I've never tried the Sony R1.

More importantly, the NEX AF usually locks 9/10 indoors, 10/10 outdoors. With my batch of X100s, my indoor rate with the second smallest center AF box was about 4/10 indoors,7/10 outdoors.

I'd agree with the above but can't assign ratios. All in all I'd give the X100 a "it works, but..." grade, but it should be better. The NEX AF is miles more accurate and prompt than the X100's.

I like to choose for myself the focus point, sometimes the exposure point, and recompose. The X100 also hobbles you some by making the focus box HUGE if you put the camera in MF mode, intending to use AFL to lock on focus. This is how I use an AF DSLR and I was delighted to find the ability in the X100 but it is brain dead in its implementation. There's absolutely no reason for this and to my knowledge it remains the same today.

I respectfully disagree. The X100 was made specifically with the form factor of a smaller and more pocketable camera will nice IQ that we would want to carry around... Anyone knows when the camera will be available for sale?

We all have different needs / expectations. The Leica RF's don't have AF at all and cost far more $$$ than the xpro. The Leica's are also touted as walk-around and vacation cameras and many people have used them successfully to take pictures of almost anything - moving or not! (Including myself - I loved the M8.2)

I found with the X100 that I treated it more like the Leica's than my huge (and fast AF) DSLR's. If you're willing to change your style of shooting to more zone focused (or prefocused with AF is what I do) and deliberate these types of cameras can and do produce very pleasing results and are a blast to use. I find they boost my creativity a lot. But I'm a bit different - I also enjoyed the Sigma DP1 and most people found it's AF unusable!

The xpro is supposed to be released by the beginning of March.

That's the internal question that I'm struggling with. As a current M lens user, this is how I see things, preliminarily:

GXR: great sensor performance with M lenses (even more when the 16mp module comes,) ok add-on tilt EVF, good size
Nex-5N: good sensor performance with M lenses, fantastic add-on tilt EVF, good size
Nex-7: seemingly not so great performance with M lenses as a whole, fantastic built-in EVF, good size
X-Pro1: probably great sensor performance with M lenses, probably ok built-in EVF, a little larger

Douglas, concerning the performance if RF wideangles on the X-Pro-1 I would be pleasantly surprised if they are as good as with the Ricoh GXR. but my bet is they will suffer the same or worse issues than the NEX-7.

If you look at that diagram of the Fuji 18/2 mounted on the camera showing the lens layout and the light path, you'll see a large converging rear element which directs the rays almost perpendicular to the sensor. Thus, we can infer that the sensor doesn't likes acute incident rays at all. Another inference being that the 18/2 is a strong retrofocus design, because a large rear element, almost as large as the sensor, even if it's very close to it, means a very distant exit pupil, like a WA. SLR lens.
We know also that retrofocus lenses, while solving the problem of vigneting, color drift and corner smearing, need a complicated, bulky and costly design if we want to keep the sharpness high and the distortion/CA aberration low.
That Fuji 18/2, while not a pancake, is compact, quite fast at f/2 and not expensive. Retrofocus + WA + fast + cheap + compact = quality not stellar. ( at best.)
Time will tell, but the precedent of latest Fuji lenses for digital Hasselblads with heavy in camera processing, seems to point that their choice was to design affordable and compact lenses for the X-PRO-1 and use in-camera lens correction to make up the 'barely good' performances of their new lenses.
Leicas M8/9 correct the color drift and vigneting for their WA. That means increased noise in the corners but nothing else is compromised. Now, if we need to correct also CA and distortion, the RAW files will be hit noticeably. because the software will have to interpolate, add or subtract pixels, etc. For instance, I have a Canon FD 24/2 -a good lens but has moderate laCA. If I correct this in Photoshop, there's a visible blurring of fine details in the outer part of the image.
I'd like to be proved wrong, but it's possible that the benefit of not using an specific AA filter will be defeated by those in-camera lens corrections.

Auto Focus speeds greatly improved since the X100 (Paraphrased from the attached video)

After watching the Dpreview video, the xp1 AF locks on pretty quickly and the shutter fires much faster than my x100 with the 1.11 firmware. That's enough of a reason to replace the x100 with the xp1. The x100 is far behind my old Nex5 and current 5n in terms of AF speed. I also get a lot of misses with the x100 when on the street, at parties, at my niece's dance recitals and so on, which is exactly why I bought the x100 - I wanted a walkaround camera that doesn't make everyone try to duck out of the way or look over when the shutter fires. I would use the Nex all the time, but the machine gun shutter draws way too much attention and I don't want to lug the 5d2 around.

Fast AF will probably send me to the shops buying it but I really want some comparisons to DSLRs like my 7D. Size also looks right. As Canon refuses to give me something with an EF-S mount (Why Canon, why? ) this looks to me like the best light system out there. If they'd put IBIS in it I'd call it perfect.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
