Gary - Now that is really impressive!
The V1 does perform quite nicely, doesn't it?
Wouldn't it be cool if Nikon released a 400/5.6VR -- I could hang that and a V1 from by belt as a second to a 500VR+D4. Using the V1 for reach and the big rig for low light and counting gnats on whiskers would be pretty radical, eh?

I am not buying the D4, I have the D3s/D3x so Il'll wait for the next gen before I upgrade bodies. I finally have a delivery date for my adapter, cant wait to try the 70-200 on it. There is an eagle that is waiting to get his picture printed. Looking at your owl makes me think it will serve as a great backup plus. Using the 500/4 = 1350/4, sounds kind of strange. Maybe I'll never need any longer glass.
Nikon was bashed for this body, turns out there was some long term thinking in this process it appears.
My delivery is slated for Friday, I'll be out Saturday weather permitting or not and test this little camera & adapter.
Should be fun.
They are not in good supply for sure, but as long it comes in this week I'll have a chance to play with it. Gary's pics gets me going, if the tundra swans are down, they are fairly slow and smooth in flight, should be a good test while I wait for the bald eagles.
Apparently nobody has stock on the adapter here in Toronto ... so looks like I'll probably wait a couple of months to get one. I am trying to think of what accessory I'd like to get first -- GPS or Flash? Anyone?
Flash if you are doing any shots indoors. The only way to do any flash is the SB-N5. I like it but it's not very powerful. It would be killer if it supported CLS, but alas it doesn't. I have the GPS also and it seems to work fine, but the flash I use all the time.
I had a little trouble finding one as well, a few online had them listed in stock but when I'd place they order they vanished. Finally have one coming, at least Fed Ex says so. I have the flash and have used it a few times. It appears to work well, no battery as it runs off the camera battery.
For myself the flash has more value/usage than the GPS. If I had the J1 it might be different. It is very similar to a full size flash regarding rotating head that tilts for bounce. Obviously limited but not like the pop-ups.
Interesting, and thanks for your thoughts .... I rarely do flash, but this is one camera that I can see myself using the flash, as I'd go to this for family shots over my bigger gear, and its nice to have bounce flash abilities at parties and whatnot. But at the same time - I definately am wanting the GPS unit for it, but I can wait to get it sometime before I go up to Whitehorse in March. The majority of my photography is architectural and landscape, so I'd like the ability to geotag everything I shoot.

+1. Why Nikon did not make this cls compatible is beyond me. SB-N5 is nice but not powerful enough.
If you want to use ISO 100 and wide open on any of the lenses, probably about 6 feet. If you go to ISO 400 and wide open on any of the lenses, you can use it across a normal sized room. Both of these are with it as direct flash. If you bounce the flash off anything but a low ceiling it's going to be dramatically reduced, probably ISO 400 and ISO 1600 for the two above cases.
Depending on pre-flashes, one could use this dedicated flash to trigger other flashes optically. The big Nikons like SB-800 have this capability through SU-4 Mode. Some third-party equivalents (Wein) can even handle pre-flash. Nonetheless, lack of CLS support is dopey.

Yes you can do that. There is an article on Rob Gilbraith's site where he talks about using the V1 to trigger flashes in slave mode.

Does anyone know if someone has put together a video rig yet for the V1/J1? I have tried googling it, but I don't see anything. I'd be curious to see something like that.
