p.2 #1 · Nikon 1 V1

Hey guys, I got to spend about 30 minutes today with the V1. I must say, I was quite impressed, especially with the video mode. I shot a few sample clips, and put a quick sample video together on premiere.

The still shots were not bad. Looking at some 100% crops - at 3200 ISO - there is noise for sure... but not so much that it destroys the image.

The best images were definately at lower ISO. Please note - I was only able to shoot inside the camera store - so no chance for an in the field opportunity.. but I would definately love to get a hold of a unit and try it out in the field. We'll see. I might buy one afterall.

Not to diss the V1 or anything, but I can't help but think Steve Huff is just Ken Rockwell's alternate ego/website. I mean, I really think this. Their writing style is eerily similar, especially when they're super-excited or trying to convince you that you're wrong.

As for the adapter, does it enable VR to be retained? Edit - nevermind, just found out it does...that's pretty freaking sweet.

Just to clear things up, Steve Huff is definitely no Ken Rockwell. He doesn't "review" cameras he doesn't actually try (just to "juke" Google and get viewers that way). I really enjoy Steve Huff's website and reviews because he tells it as it is and shares lots of full size photos. If you do look at some of his reviews for things like the Leica X1, Fuji X100, and the newer Nikon V1 you'll see that they're mostly positive but it's because at the time they were very unique cameras with more pros than cons. The V1 isn't perfect (but there is no such thing as one... every camera could have better iso, better lenses, better size, etc) but he clearly showed the pros of it and the cons... in his review he even had a very in-depth video tour of the camera that was really useful.

But like all websites, it's their opinion and you can take it for what it is. He isn't trying to convince you of anything, he's just writing his experience with it.

Have you watched the video review of the Nikon V1 on the site? The voice does not sound like KR at all.

Plus here is a self-portrait of himself from the article:

This may be OT, but if the V1 sensor is 8.8mm x 13.2mm, and contains 10.1 million pixels, then the pixel size is 3.4 microns. The 24mp D3X pixel size is 6 microns.

So scaled up to FF (24mm x 36mm) the V1 sensor could be 75mp. D4X = 75mp?

so the 36mp d800 should be very nice indeed.

Hey guys, am I crazy.... I think I am selling my x100, and getting the Nikon V1 with the kit 10-30 lens to start. I got to play with the camera last week in the store..... And I was impressed. AF speed and video blew me away. thoughts?

I've thought about doing the same thing. I love the images from the X100 and the fast lens but I like the idea of staying with the Nikon system. I just wish the flash system was compatible. If it was I wouldn't give it a second thought. I also have a GH2 system with lots of lenses but I use it mostly for video and family stuff. I'm guessing with the next crop of DSLRs from Nikon that the video ability will be improved enough that I might be able to use the Nikons for that as well.

Still do not have the Ft-1. V1 is turning up to be a good everyday cam.. So small, the body + 10-30 & 30-110 + flash + spare battery fit in the original Nikon 24-70/2.8 case That's it! Hi-iso is definitely not D3 quality but it is a lot better than the D2x, definitely!
I really wish Nikon placed a standard hot shoe so I can use my bigger Nikon flashes. Or at least, made the SB-N5 compatible w/ Nikon cls. Oh well, maybe they will cover these in future releases.

the v1 looks like fun but its a completely different camera to the x100 which i love for low light stuff that the v1 really cant compete with lens (yet) or sensor. if i had more long afs lenses i'd probably pick one up by the summer but would rather wait for the v2. info button and my menu would be nice, mind you a firmware update could sort them out.

I really think that they are sending mixed signals with this camera. They don't include a huge strength of the Nikon system in the CLS and claim that this camera is for a different market. Then they release an adapter that allows you to use your pro lenses. User reviews have been great but it's definitely not the answer for everyone.

It is not supposed to be the answer for everyone. It nicely fills the niche between P&S and DSLR, and there are plenty of buyers that want that option. That is can use pro lenses is a bonus.

Smart move Nikon.

Obviously not but inclusion of CLS control doesn't seem like a stretch. NIkon is known for their flash system. There's nothing wrong with sticking to your strengths no matter what level of camera it is.

Seen from Ireland, this was not far away - a place called Obertauern .....
Hope you enjoyed Kitzbühel. :-)

BTW,
for those who are interested in the fast AF capability and the huge buffer size of the V1 (bigger than the D3s)

Here is the whole series 2 of the above images came from. There were 41 RAW images, shot with the AFS 30-110mm. Due to the approach of the snowboarder heading towards me, I started with 100mm and zoomed out to 40mm.

Basically, it took me only a couple of seconds to capture this 400 MPixel "collage" :-)

Higher resolution (1800x1400) - click here.

andy, when shooting with the j1 on the slopes can you get any action shots or do you really need the evf when the light is too bright?

The EVF helps on a sunny day. Not absolutely necessary, but helpful. Another point: I need reading glasses and the EVF with diopter compensation allows me to keep my glasses in the bag for all menue related activities. Lastly, pressing the EVF to my head stabilizes the camera plus lenses better than just pure handholding (at least for me after so many years with DSLRs)

The hard part is follow the object when its (in this case she) gets closer. The panning speed increases and it is easy to "overshoot".

Have done dog shoots at the beach with the J1 and it was possible as well ....

regards,
Andy
