Agreed with lxdesign. After having used a V1 for a few weeks, IMO, the J1 is a much better value.
The V1 has an EVF, bigger buffer, mechanical shutter, and will take the external flash. But other than that, it's pretty much the J1 with a different skin. I'm hoping Nikon's next iteration will be one that is truly geared towards the enthusiasts with better direct controls and customization of settings.
I'm not disagreeing, but the EVF on the V1 is beautiful, and worth every nickle (to me). But, I probably could be very happy with the J1.
So I was just thinking - wouldn't it be cool if Nikon brought out a few more CX lenses - like a 40mm macro with 1:1 capabilities (rough range of the 105mm)
Speaking of macro, I like the V1 with FT1 and 105mm 2.8 combo:
The fish is about 3/4 inch long. The 2.7x crop on the FT1 is so much I found myself backing up just to get the whole fish into the frame. With the same lens on a D3 I couldn't get in close enough.

I have had the V1 for a couple of months, I agree with Steve, I was surprised on how well it performs. I also own the D3x and D3s so I've got a good baseline to compare. I find the V1 really does have a learning curve more than most might give it, however one can always auto everything and it still performs.
I should have the adapter in tomorrow, it will be fun trying it on real moving targets, eagles, swans inflight with the 70-200 and 200-400. I'll post em when I get them.
Hey how are you doing with that adapter.
I got mine and the camera doesn't read a lens on the cam
I ordered the adapter as I would traveling and wanted to play with the V1 however even though it was listed in stock from BuyDig I got an email two days later saying they needed to verify the order, I called them, it was not in stock so I cancelled and put my name on the B&H list. So I'm awaiting an email. Hope it comes in soon enough to try it on some BIF ( eagles & tundra swans) Will wait for B&H unless there is another reputable source.
It's only a matter of time until we start seeing some bird shots from this camera with a 300/400500/600 mm lens on it. I will be VERY interested to see and hear about the performance.

As soon as I get my FT1, I'll head up to the forest and photograph the wolves and post some pictures.
Great catch Gary. I'm very impressed with this camera, keeping in mind I have the P7000 and the V-1 as my P&S's.
I never expected it to replace my D3s/x. Ordered the FT-1 again from Amazon, can't wait to try the big lens on it.
Might I ask what platform you were using? Andreas from the other thread suggested a video tripod & head. His results were not as good on a Wimberly, I cannot understand why that would be.

Thanks for the post.

Hi Gerard;
Indeed, I have have my P7000 up for sale on Kijiji right now! The V1 is an impressive little camera system, though needless to say it will not replace my DSLR's. Still, for those times when the atmospheric conditions are good and I need "max reach" for a static shot, I would consider using the V1 over my D300 for the extra crop factor.
That shot was taken hand held out the car window, VR on (normal). I took some others with the 200/2+TC14EII and they're just as sharp as this, though at a lower magnification.,
could the results on the wimberly that Gerard talked about be due to VR. Using VR on a tripod can sometimes cause blur to occur, as its really designed to eliminate shake when hand-holding. I usually use my 200-400 on a monopod.

Agreed as well on the EVF. Better than the Pany GH2/G3 and Oly EVF's for sure.
Has anyone tried the V1 with the adapter and a Zeiss MF lens? I'd be curious to hear about that experience. The V1 does not have focus peaking or anything similar so it could be more of a challenge to focus.

Given the extremely dense APS-C sensor, sharp tele shots will be dependent on:
1. Top quality glass and with limited use of TC's
2. Rock-solid long-lens technique.
3. Proper use of VR.
These are well know issues for anyone who has been shooting superteles. My D3 is relatively tolerant of sloppy long-lens technique with it's big, fat, pixels. My D300 is much less tolerant and no doubt the V1/J1 will be even less so again. Fortunately, 10FPS is your friend!
Here's one from today...
Nikon 1 V1 ,FT1, Nikkor AF-S 500mm f/4G ED VR 1/200s f/5.6 at 500.0mm iso100
Full frame, no crop.
Picture control set to neutral, in camera sharpening=0
Converted using NX2 V2.3. NO post processing adjustment except resized to 1200 pix and sharpened for web (20,5,0).
My D300 couldn't have done much better than this, but me thinks the V1 will show some weakness with heavy crops.
Now that looks promising! How does a crop look - if you have the time? Thanks.
