Not fair..... The D700 is superior. They do not compete in the same class. But the V1 can hold its own pretty well. And for video.... It beats the D700 any day
I have taken my Nikon 1 V1 to Pittsburgh, PA with the 300 2.8 VR and 1.7 TC mounted via the FT-1. I created this image with a map of my shooting location and target location to help illustrate 1377mm of "reach".

As one who analyze aerial and satellite photos for whatever reasons, I found that the information given in your picture does not match your description.
The direct line of sight from your shooting location to your target location would have the bridge as well as the white building across the river in view due to the low height of your shooting location as well as your target location with respect to the bridge and the white building acoss the river.
The next thing is the angle of your shot is more like taken from the stadium due to your target building viewing angle with the river showing up at the top right hand corner as shown by your aerial photo of your target location.
Try using a ruler linking the two red dots in your photo will show what I am trying to said.
Or maybe I might be wrong because I did not google to look at the 3D image of that location or able to manupulate one of those commercial or military satellite to do a point by point altitude measurement.
Oops! Now I noticed that your shooting location is on top of a slope at the end of Fairview Ave and the the funnel like looking feature is actually from the white building across the river with the Carnegie Science Center sign on it.
Mystery solved!
If one has a D3 and a D300 would selling the D300 and buying the V1 + FT1 make sense? I realize that they are two different cameras, but it seems that the V1 is very capable little camera. How would it perform as a backup camera at a wedding (where the shooter is simply a family friend and not the pro)?
I sold my D300s to get the V1 + FT1... Reason: weight saving and the reach for birds (not BIF). I have no regrets at all... Just wish Nikon would release AF-C with the FT 1
This thread that I started last year is still going? Glad I got rid of the V1. I'll take a cheap DSLR any day and certainly would not take a V1 in place of a D300.

Looking for suggestions for a small bag to carry a V1 with 10-30, 30-100 lenses, FT1 and flash. I'd like it as small as possible. Any ideas?
I have that exact kit and the Lowepro Apex 110AW is the perfect size. I keep the FT-1 with my DSLR kit though.

I looked at it and I'm assuming you keep a lens on the body as shown. If so, where do you put the second lens?
Actually the V1 and lens attached go in with one of the ends down (not like the photo, which is a small DSLR). Almost like you would put a full sized lens in a large DSLR bag compartment. Then there is room next to it for a lens, with a nice little padded divider in between. The rear compartment of the inside of the bag holds the SB-N1, and a couple memory cards. It's a snug fit, but it all fits with nothing forced or squished. I'll try grab a picture of it for you soon.
