Or, perhaps, a Nikon FM3a.

Phew, there are loads. My favorites: Nikon F, FM/FE*, F3, F6, Contax RTS II, Leica R6.2, Olympus OM-1, OM-4.

Sadly I only own one of these (OM-1) but then you didn't ask how much we like 35mm film. I prefer medium format by a mile.

Contax RX or RTSII over Contax S for me. Contax RX is my all time fav.
Leica R6.2 is really nice too.

Pentax LX feels solid, haven't owned one but have looked through one on several occasions.

Out of the Nikons, I think FM2 or FE2 are nice.

I have to add that the plain prism Canon F1 is gorgeous.

I have a couple of EOS-3 cameras that I really like. It would be easy to get just about any lens you want with an EOS-3.

If the viewfinder is important to you I suggest the Leicaflex SL.

The EOS-3 is a really great camera, but just like its later digital daughter, the 5DII (which I own and really like) it is a bit of a Klotz when compared to the ergonomic delights of the R9, or the robust versatility of the LX with its stunning viewfinder, which are both much smaller, but even handier.

I would be so happy with a digital FF SLR that resembled any of the following in size, viewfinder and ergonomics - LX, R9, OM4ti, OM 2, FM3a, FE2, F3, Contax RTSII, RX.

I'd add Leicaflex SL to this list.

I must confess looking at the NEX-5n and the FE2 on my desk and wondering what it would take to graft the two together....

The viewfinder in the Leica R4 is actually a higher magnification than in later R series camers so you have a larger image which makes focusing wide angle lenses quite a bit easier. The 'trick' however is to replace the original R4 focusing screen (which is about 1 stop darker) with a later/current focusing screen from R6/7 camera. The result is a brighter image. I prefer the R4 over the R8/9 for this reason alone however the R8/9 is a better camera in almost every way except size/weight.

The Canon 1V might just be the best 35mm film camera ever made. I still have 2, need to sell these...

The Olympus have great viewfinders too, such as the OM2n and similar.

I don't feel the NIkons (FM2, F4, F3, which are the bodies I've used) are in the same legue in some ways.

Leica R4 was codesigned with Minolta?

Contax S2b would be in my dream kit.

Why don't you start with a sledgehammer on the NEX-5N and see how far that gets you

I asked for an RTS III for my birthday once and got a K1000 instead. Certainly not the fanciest camera among those discussed, but it treated me well for many years...

Nikon F2Sb or F2AS;100% all glass viewfinder; L-screen (45 degree split wedge); all mechanical with battery only for meter; still ticking after all these years.

Your choice of Zeiss ZF lenses.

Blows smoking holes in Leica R.

Seems like a reasonable start -- but when I approach such projects myself, I usually start with gentler approaches, and only need the sledgehammer after lesser tools have failed. I must admit, though, that there's a certain efficiency in starting out with the inevitable tool first. The only drawback is that if I start there, I won't have had enough liquid courage to properly lubricate the work.

I have both the MX and the LX, and with the newer focusing screen, the LX view is incomparably brighter, sharper and more enjoyable to use.

So an LX with Ltd. lenses, or an R9.

a bit more expensive than i'd like. does the LX focus screen with it's brighter treatment still show dof at large apertures as well as the MX? if so is it possible to replace the MX screen with the stock LX screen (i don't mind completely taking cameras apart)?

correct, the leica R4 and minolta XD-11 are basically the same camera except that i believe the leica has more advanced metering and a bit larger viewfinder (the XD-11 still has a very good viewfinder).

do you have any idea how it compares to the others i listed with regard to magnification and coverage? i can never find specs on leica viewfinders.

Questions like this are best answered at Boz Dimitrov's most-excellent Pentax K-mount site.

In this case, http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/misc/focus/screens/index.html
