OK, here are the centre and left edge crops in that case - not a very good example as the left edge is not in focus, rather within DOF. Not bad, not great.
The Ultron seems a little crisper than this at 5.6 in the middle, but the edges drop off.
Well, to clarify my position on the Ultron(s)... I must repeat "having not used them" (especially when it comes to NEX), and conversations I "sited" being mostly on FF rangefinders, with whatever that would mean to the outcomes. I don't know what MTF on any CV lenses look like, if there are zone B dips or other fun that might add to NEXMTFSS (NEX Modulation Transfer Function Strange Stuffs).
If you scour the web at places like Luminous Landscape, Rockwell, Photo.net, etc... the "sharp everywhere" theme seems to resurface. I'm sure there are counterpoints too.
I also never said "compared to [insert Zeiss or Leica]", nor did I recall that being mentioned much in my time spent reading all this when I should be out taking photos.
To me it seems as if the Ultrons are trying to be the 'Crons of the CV line, where the Noktons would then be the 'Luxes, etc etc. JMO, nothing more.
I think like Douglas, in that the 28 Ultron wouldn't be a pocket lens, not in my jacket anyway. The OM and FDn 28's are ~ 1/2 longer. They are all big lenses to me. I can carry any of these under my jacket on my ultralight strap across my chest which works fine for around town use. I wouldn't take any of them backpacking with me, but I'm an ounce counter, others might.
looks pretty dang usable to me. In fact the left edge at f/2 is not as soft as I would have thought based on huff's review--f/2 is for closer work in lower light anyway.
Well, it is not that small and it is not really a 2.0 lens, I would expect a rather 2.8 lens. It is also not that small at 51mm. The Leica Summicron ASPH is only 4cm long, the Elmarit ASPH is 3cm long without the hood. That would be pocketable, but it also costs a lot more.
Charlie, I don't think I have a single piece of clothing that would fit that 75/2.5 in a pocket. In fact, only lenses I've managed to pocket is the MS Optical Perar, Sony 16, and maybe Notion 35/1.4, and that was only on a trip to Chicago in the winter. I live in Southern California, so not a lot of big, cold weather clothes around here.
Could have been a poor sample, the Ultron, it was alright at closer distances at F2, but clearly not up to scratch at infinity and F2 (are any wide angles?)

I said coat pocket, not tight jeans pocket , you never put on a jacket or blazer to go out to dinner? I skied 40 days last seaon with the 75 in my inside breast pocket
Even with a sweatshirt you can sling the Rfs under and they are not much, SLRs not comfortable like that.
In LA I guess you use your shorts and they think it's your junk, hehe

I don't think the leica 28/2 likes infinity with those distances either--I will test it at some point, carefully, but in quick shots I remember thinking--whoa I better try my cheapo M adapter to see if I can get infinity right way out there--seemed to shift past the stop with the hawks. But when to you shoot long like that so fast? The lens is far sharper stopped down as sebboh and others point out. At f/2 the test shot is better to be faces at 2 meters, right?
Nope, I've been shooting rangefinder lenses for a year and a half on Nex, and I've only put it into a jacket pocket once. I switched from a hand strap to a neck strap a few months back because of this. The 5N isn't going into a sport coat even with a Nokton 34/1.4. Way too bulky.

why are you wearing jackets in LA?
i carried my NEX and rokkor 135/2.8 in my coat pocket in chicago (i also carried a dslr and pancake snowboarding in utah). in SF the biggest i can do in my coat pocket is NEX + rokkor 24/2.8 (the littlest version).

On sport coats I use the side pockets...often I guess I better prove it -- would have been easier before I sent my n5 off to belarus, but I will figure it out. OK nite all...all the best

Gosh! All of you talking of how hot California is… I was in San Francisco last week and I was cold! Using a jacket no problem… But then, I come from Mallorca, so I guess that it's a matter of perspective. Oh! and by the way, I was carrying the NEX on my jacket! (Contax G 28, most of the times, though!).

I'm more tempted to try an OM 28/2 or FDn 28/2 which are +/- 10 grams of the CV 28, and $300 or more less expensive, although a little larger, and much less likely to have any color shift issues.
The OM 28/2 is quite small for a fast slr 28, but with the large adapter added in you still end up carrying around a lens that happens to have a tiny camera attached to it It's a nice lens though. Lower contrast wide open, but very sharp across the frame when stopped down just a bit.
IIRC, the OM 28/2 is 5mm shorter than the FDn 28/2, the FD adapter is a little smaller though. For practical purposes it's a wash.
I have an OM adapter already, so I thought I might see if I can track down an OM 28/2
Either of these lenses are only about 1/2" longer than the Ultron 28 with adapter figured in. Diameter isn't important to me as much as long as it's not noticeably larger than the camera body.
