FM has a strong feeling of community and as such, folks on FM look out and help each for each other. If I want to sell something on FM, I look up the price of sold items here first and based on that I come up with my own pricing. That's why I am a proponent of leaving some kind of price reference behind.
The B&S board is designed for private folks that want to sell their camera gear that gathers dust and it s not for commercial purposes. Several years ago, several sellers listed mulitiple items that they bought somewhere else for the purupose of reselling them for profit here. Back then they could list them without asking price and just mentioned to contact them for details and asking price. Fortunately, FM changed for the better and Fred implemented the requirement of including the asking price for every FS item.
It is entirely up to Fred whether he wants to impose the new requirement or not but at least, I brought it up to his attention and I included the reasoning behind that. Can you tell us the reason why you don't agree with that idea, please?...Show more →
I agree 100% that we are a great community.
I used to be on other forums before, now I am just on this forum.
I just feel that it should be up to seller to decide to leave the price or not.If you really
wanted to know the asking price ,all you had to do is go through the previous posts
on the thread. Most often there are many for sale threads of the item(like the 7D or D7K),
just have a look at these and you get a pretty good idea of the item's going price.
Besides no one knows for sure the final price as it can be further(or not) negotiated
behind closed doors,so to speak.
I'm ambivalent. I like being able to look back over past prices, but I support leaving it up to the sellers. The listed price is often not exactly what the final negotiated price was, so it's not necessarily accurate. I also tend to delete the price -- not to hide anything for myself, but for the buyer. If someone decides to resell, I don't think they should be held to the earlier selling price. It's ultimately their business. Sometimes something sells for more a second time around, sometimes for less. That's ok by me.
I feel leaving some sort of price history can be beneficial, especially for items not sold as often, like super-teles. Some people don't like making their FS listings into "reverse auctions" and going through the process of lowering prices and negotiating to find where the market value is. They would rather set a fair price as firm and wait for someone who is looking for their item (not for someone looking to profit). I also think most people understand there is variance in prices throughout the year, and will understand that if someone buys an item early in its "off-season" and then resells it when demand is at its peak, they often will make a profit, and vice-versa. I have gotten great deals on some items and won't mind telling buyers if I ever sell those items that I need more than the amount I paid, simply because they are worth more than that (and would fetch more than that if sold elsewhere).
And as was mentioned, neither the starting price nor the last listed price are necessarily the price at which an item sells, so it doesn't give everything away.
We should eliminate "bump for a great seller", "what a guy, bump" or "bump for a nice lens" all these sorts of bumping. You should give everyone a fair chance.
Also, there should be a limit for one to have so many active FS listings. I hate to see 5 or 6 lines FS posting by the same poster, come on!
I made some changes... I made the subject line much bigger. Almost double the original size. I had to remove the "latest poster" field on viewboard to accomodate that. (Only for the buy and sell boards)

First I want to express my gratitude for the continuous improvement to this board.
Second, I want to say that I support the idea of leaving the price on sold items as it is important for future reference. The most important price is - of course - the last one.

Fred,
For us older guyz and gals who have been here practically from day#1, your changes are great!!
Keep up the great work!
And thanks!
Thanks for "squaring out" the "WTB" problem.
Dan
Some additional changes were made. When posting a WTB thread, the price field disappears. It didn't make sense to be forced to add a price for a WTB thread.
Best,
Fred
