I had several transactions using normal PP where sellers sent me scratched lenses. PP sided with the sellers.

It all depends how fast you're moving. I received a damaged lens from one FMer only a few weeks ago. I sent the guy an email asking for a full refund. I don't steal money so I thought I was entitled to get what I pay for, not a damaged lens. The guy had a hesitation and I had a feeling he doesn't want to cooperate. Even before I sent him a second email I filled a Paypal claim and called Paypal right away. They seized the funds until I get the lens back to the seller. I went that far the same day I received the lens because I though the crook would close his account before I would get the lens back to him. In the end I was right. If it wasn't for Paypal to hold the funds he would have never refunded my money. I got a negative feedback for trying to warn the others about the scammer (leaving him a negative) but, at least, I didn't lose $400.

Yet again it proves that we are not "really"protected by Paypal ,as if he(she)wants , they can
empty their account immediately, giving you no protection.
My point is simply that when we think Paypal has our backs, they don't,if the monies are gone, they are gone.

Brad, you're not really telling me that you honestly believe that "gifting" the money to a seller to buy a lens is the same thing as indicating a purchase of goods (as PayPal asks)? I may not have had my coffee yet this morning but come'on. Let's be real.

Also, the costs aren't the same - you can still save the fee by funding it with a bank balance. However I agree that the gift option has become less compelling - why would a buyer use the gift option to buy a lens, pay the 3% (funded by CC) and lose

I'm certain that when crooks make a little less money than normal, it's not called fraud.

AMEN to that Armee. I received the exact same message from paypal few years back as a buyer. For those who think paypal is an insurance, it is not always 100% true.

Amen to what exactly? That PayPal is not a perfect service?

So you geniuses think that the solution to your perceived slights against PayPal is to go from having a good chance at recourse (i.e. some protection) to committing fraud (i.e. labelling the transaction as a gift) and then having ZERO chance at recourse and no protection.

Okay...y'ah...makes sense to me. Sheesh.

*I'm seriously beginning to question the level of intelligence of people here. The lack of logic and reasoning ability boggles the mind.

As an aside, over the past 6 years, I've had 4 situations where PayPal has had to step in (I was the buyer each time). PayPal found in my favour in 3 out of the 4 occasions saving me hundreds of dollars from scammers. I have no particular love of PayPal (I still think they screwed me on the 1 claim I lost) but to advocate stealing from them by misrepresentation (i.e. labelling transactions as gifts) is asinine.

^ It's is available, you just become a "merchant" Been with 'em for years, great feedback/review system and fees
are based on your monthly volume. It's ~3% but you can get that down if you use it a lot. I'll Invoice people buying
CD's of rodeo shots from me, they can pay with any of the Major CC's...very secure and you get your money in 2 days.

Apologies for gettin' OT, Fred.

More professional, faster payout, mainly not having the stigma of eBay/PayPal associated with you.
They "verify" the buyers CC for you and allow them to leave feedback for the transaction...that's huge! HTH
Oh yeah, cheaper too...I'm at ~ 2% for the year.

lol - yes I'll grant you that, there can be a stigma (some might call it "stench") being connected with PayPal/eBay.

As imperfect as the PayPal protection/insurance policies can be, does Google offer something similiar. To me paying the 3% to Google vs. PayPal would be mostly about paying for this coverage.

just got contacted by [email protected] about a wtb I listed here. price was insane, asked him for feedback and photo of the item with his name on a index card for proof of ownership/pics and never heard back from the guy.

With PayPal I always use my backup source, credit card, to purchase anything. I have to empty my PayPal account of any funds, then the money is taken from my credit card. I have had a few instances where I have had to challenge the purchase, the item was not as stated, but the credit card company has backed me every time.

I prefer to purchase items through this site than through craigslist. At least with this site you can do a thorough check of an item once it arrives. With craigslist once you leave with the item you do not have any recourse.

Here's a recent post on PayPal's own community forum that describes the danger of using the gift option. The reply is by one of PayPal's own employees. The link is here.
