Well, I drove down to Canoga Camera yesterday as I couldn't wait.....
I bought the 35 1.4L
I wouldn't normally use this focal length on people, but I used it today at 1.6 and 1.8
This thing is silky smooth, but you have NO DOF to play with.
Focus is 110% critical.
I posted a bunch over in the people section, but figured I'd show some samples of the lens here.
Very nice Kurt! I've been thinking of this beauty too. It'll be one of my first choices after getting a 1Dmk2. Bokeh with that pinpoint sharpness is like paradise. How's it feel on the camera??
Kurt... man... why are you doing this? I just emptied my bank account, and here you are showing off some new fast prime that delivers great results. I was sitting here thinking.. "Man! I sure am glad that I got that 85mm f/1.2. No more fast lenses needed for me! No sirrreee...." And then you post these.
If you keep them coming, I may have to go into debt, so please, cease and desist.
Man....Kurt.....dude....you're killing me. Live in CA, beautiful surf shots, and now you have to go and post these wonderful images of a stunning young woman.
Go into debt my friend.
It's a beautiful chunk of glass. Right up there with your 85 1.2L.
You're in trouble, because I'll keep postin' !!!
Jamie,
Too funny. Trust me man, you don't want to live in LA though.
I'd rather be in La Jolla or somewhere down that way.
But I work in the movie industry so I have to here, or Canada !!
( a little film industry joke right there )
The stunning young woman is my good friends sister-n-Law.
Aspiring actress.
I just wanted to play with my lens and she needed some photos.....
I really enjoy shooting portraits, just don't have much time lately with all the skate/surf stuff.
I'll be back to work on ' Cold Case ' at Warner Bros next month and I'll be back to Weekend Warrior Status...
La Jolla? Well... I dunno. We have not been seeing much sun down here. I had a rare opportunity to do some shooting last weekend, but it looks like that great big softbox in the sky called June Gloom has taken over. Oh well...
Yea, I doubt I would want to live in LA. Its been a LONG time since I have been there. Was in San Diego in '96.....wow. What a beautiful area.
I'm actually gonna be in LA in late July.....got a friend's wedding in Long Beach....if it weren't such a jam-packed trip, I'd try to talk you into teachin' me some surf shooting...
Sigh....

I think that should show people why FAST lenses are a must have -- not only for the speed but also for the very nice DOF.
Try doing those shots at F5.6 or F8
I just wish Canon would have made a real quality 1.4 20 MM Lens -- although Zeiss 21 does pretty well (manual of course).
If the model comes with the lens -- can I buy 2.
The 35 MM seems to be great for shooters wanting that focal length -- actually on a 1.6X or even 1.3X camera it would work nicely as a "normal" 50 MM.
Thanks for posting the shots -- I might get one for the 1D MK II as I'm getting a bit sick of the 28-70 now. I used to love that Lens but it just doesn't seem to sparkle anymore.
