I am surprised that the 35f1.4l can be such a nice head/shoulder portrait lens. Must be the photographer!!!

BTW, if the model is old and ugly, will this thread (and the other in the People Photography) be as active/popular as it is now

Sweet purchase, Kurt. I especially like the landscape format you chose for the last shot.

The 35/1.4 is a fantastic lens. In fact, I shot an entire concert with it a month or two ago:

It is also a great lens to shoot with the 85/1.2 on a second body:

Between 35/1.4 and 35/2.0, here are some numbers, for whatever they are worth

35/1.4
Photodo test result: 4
Effective focal length: 34
Weighted MTF for 35 mm: f1,4 0,61, f4 0,82, f8 0,81
Average Weighted MTF: 0,81 Grade: 4,0
Weighted MTF 10 lp/mm: 0,89
Weighted MTF 20 lp/mm: 0,78
Weighted MTF 40 lp/mm: 0,59

35/2.0
Photodo test result: 3,9
Effective focal length: 35
Weighted MTF for 35 mm: f2 0,73, f2,8 0,77, f4 0,79, f8 0,81
Average Weighted MTF: 0,80 Grade: 3,9
Weighted MTF 10 lp/mm: 0,89
Weighted MTF 20 lp/mm: 0,77
Weighted MTF 40 lp/mm: 0,53

To me they are pretty close except that 35/1.4 can do 1.4. I guess it matters a lot for some cases. On the other hand, 35/2 is very compact and light - 210g vs 580g. It's way cheaper, too. Oh, that may be why people wouldn't buy it
But then I certainly agree that the Model deserves an L lens

Kurt, great images, sure the model loves them too. The conventional widsom tells me that when photographing people this close with a wide angle lens (even though 35mm is a moderately wide one), you would get some perspective distortions. But if there is any, it doesn't seem to show here (I mean facial features here). I am wondering which camera you used? With 10D's 1.6 crop, 35mm would be close to 50mm (But even so, the distortion should still be there). Or was the lens on 1D or 1Ds? (OK, after visiting the other thread, I learned it is a 1D MarkII)

As for the comparison between f/1.4 and f/2, I would think the difference of background blur would be a lot more prominent than that of between 85mm f/1.2 and f/1.8, since at this focal length one stop change is a lot on DOF. I think if one wants to achive the effects as shown in these images, f/1.4 would be a better shoice.

I don't own a 35mm, but after seeing your images, it will make me to think again. 'L' fever goes on...

Lars,

these are shot at 1.6 and 1.8.
That's 1/3 and 2/3'rds a stop from wide open.
It performs very well.

I had the 35 2.0 years ago.
I really liked that lens, but I think this lens is a bit nicer.

Thanks for the feedback and if's anyone thinking about buying this lens, go for it.

It's my new favorite !!!!!!

Off to lay some Sod in the yard now... Overcast and crappy here in So. Cal.....

And don't forget the lack of USM on the 35/2

I love USM (and detest the sound of lens-focusing on lenses that don't have it) so much, I can't believe I finally broke down and got the fisheye lens.

Nudes aren't my style......... though I do love them !!!

If I had the right girl, with the same vision as myself I'd do some.

I see some perspective distortions, but less than I thought I would. More importantly, they are well-suited to the subject, and don't look out of place at all.

I normally dislike WA on anything but landscapes, but here the technique and composition were flawless.

Nice job!

Thanks Bearcat,

I agree with you about the use of WA, but I think as long as you are at eye level it works.

The ones from above do have some perspective dist. issues.

Overall, I was stoked with the lens and it's performace.

Kurt.....Was that last frame taken at f1.6 / ff1.8 or was it stopped down further? How would you compare against the 24-70L if you've owned both?

Harold,

That last frame was at 1.8 I believe. I'll check and post if it's otherwise.
I never really shot it above a 2.2 that day.

I have NOT owned the 24-70 though so I can't compare them for you.

It's a gorgeous lens for sure.

kurt: nice lens and nice model..
35 1.4 is on my wish list as well as the 70-200 2.8IS.

My 24mm in digital became ~35mm. My 50mm in film is 50mm.. so..I didn't have much need for this lens at this moment although I loved it a lot..

anyhow, congratulations on the new addition.

Looks like the 35 1.4 is a better choice than the 50 1.4, since the 50 is kind of a blah length--too similar to the human eye--not enough "ommph". A 35 and a 85 would be a great combo.

Rob,

I totally agree.
I never loved the 50, just because it was an 'in between' length.

I love the 35 and 85 combo. The 135 f2L would be the next one to get for people shots.

That would be a killer "People" photo set up.

thanks,
kurt

I like how your shots show off the model's eyes, which are intriguing. BTW, can you do something with the hair of the star of "Cold Case"? I saw a spoof of the show on MAD TV not too long ago, in which they made several references to her hair style.
