You'll probably get it in the form of 5D3 with 5FPS, 15 cross type AF points, still the same but improved 21MP sensor.

That's probably the most sensible prediction for the next advanced/semi pro/5D3 EOS model I've seen posted. Maybe a few more MP, but not many.

+1. Goes without saying that the sensor will be a lot better, with improved ISO/noise performance, Digic V, 100% VF, improved LCD screen, etc, etc ... and probably/hopefully some weather sealing too.

The MP choice has as much to do with hitting 12FPS as it does IQ, high ISO performance, etc. Remember that they are trying to combine a high speed 1d series and high MP/high IQ 1ds series into one camera. They also wanted to take back the "high ISO" champ status from Nikon, so what you see with the 18MP and lack of f/8 AF point are the compromises needed to get there.

It's not the end of the world...

It's on dxomark, k5 has higher dr as well apparently.

I agree, the 18MP is what Canon consider to be the optimum for a camera with all the features/performance that they've put in the 1DX. It's still not a camera that'll suit every need, but I'm not convinced that beast will ever exist!

The question came up, why not to choose components.
So the same body and an choosable sensor. Maybe with 20 or 21 MP (I am sure that would be enough for every high MP freak ) and only 8 FPS instead. An option for less ISO or worse IQ - for less money for example ...

Put I think you are right. People will find something else, that fits not their needs ...

Not quite. If you need tons of detail or do heavy cropping like I do, bigger is better!

Check out these crops with 5D II:

24-30 megapixels would be great for a 5D III.

I'm sure dxomark does say that; I just don't put a lot of stock in their testing methods.

Flawed testing = flawed results. Show me two cars and tell me how one car has more HP as tested on a dyno…then take both cars out to the 1/4 mile track and race 'em. I'll take the one that wins the race regardless of what the dyno said! Engineering specs don't tell the whole story…real world results do! It was an over-reliance on static laboratory engineering and not enough real-world field testing that got Canon in hot water with the 1DIII. Lab results have to be backed up by tangible evidence as well…something that DxOMark does not do.

Interesting reading all the takes on the new 1DX.

Personally, I want an upgraded camera with 32-36MP. But I'm looking to double resolution from my 1Ds2.

Still, with all of us who love the 16+MP 1Ds2, I see this new camera as a huge advance over this older one (that still takes awesome pictures). With all the technical improvements, I expect much better performance and IQ than the simple 2MP would suggest.

It is obvious that this new body is the next evolution of the sports camera that was the 1D series. I don't see that ruling out other bodies with higher MP and using some of this same technology, whether up to a 1Ds-type, or down to a 5D-type.

The announcement is all good news as far as I can see. And coming from my 1Ds2 slant, it's fantastic news.

I had the same thoughts. Maybe the last sports/PJ centric pro body because this feature set is more than enough for any news(print) type application.

I find it interesting that the feature set of the 1DX is biased towards sports and photojournalism work, yet based on personal experience, these are two market segments that are suffering quite a bit. I mean, my paper just bought D7000s as backup bodies for the photographers' old D300s or D2X cameras... other than large city dailies and the top shooters for major agencies, it's kind of a stretch for Canon to ask this group to cough up about $7K per camera when instead that money could buy 3-5 'good enough' prosumer bodies. Sports is always touted as a key target market, but if you cover pro-level sports now as your primary income, you are a very rare photographer. Most that you see on the sidelines are with papers/agencies, and sports is just one of their duties. Sure, some are sports specialists. But from a freelance perspective, there are few who are pure sports shooters.

I think the 1DX will be adopted by some, but then, I still see guys with 1DII bodies, which for newsprint work are more than sufficient in resolution and other specs. Off on a bit of a tangent, but I find it interesting that it wasn't until this past weekend that I finally saw a 400 2.8 IS II on the sidelines of an NFL game. Maybe it's the slow release of the lens, but none of my fellow photographers have been a-buzz about the Mark II super-teles.

Personally, I'm on the fence. I love the feature set of the 1DX. Having shot field sports with a 400 2.8 on an APS-H cropper since the original 1D, it would be nice to go back to how the 400 worked with film bodies. But I would also miss the reach of the 1DIV, which I considered to be the best all purpose DSLR Canon ever made (at least for my purposes: sports, editorial, corporate and various other things). I think the X, along with the proposed 200-400 with built-in 1.4x TC, especially considering the X's claimed high ISO performance, will make a killer combination. I'm just not sure I want to spend upwards of $17,000 for the combo when I know it won't generate any additional revenue compared to my current 1DIV and 400 2.8 IS kit.

It will be interesting to see what Canon unveils to fill the gap between the 1DX and the 5D series, though I doubt it will be a suitable sports camera.

18MP works great on the M9. Very sharp files from it compared to the 16MP of my 1DIV. Not having an AA filter is certainly a benefit in this respect. It's interesting I haven't heard any talk about the AA filter characteristics of the 1DX (admittedly I have not read through this entire thread), perhaps because no one has seen any full-rez files yet...

Up until now all of canon's bodies have involved some kind of trade-off. 1DSIII ... awesome camera, until you want to shoot in the dark. 5DII ... great camera, until you want to use an off center focus point @ 1.2. 1DIV ... amazing camera, until you want to shoot wide.

This camera has none of these compromises. Hi Res FF goodness with the ability to shoot in the dark and focus there too. Good job canon. You have very nearly made my perfect camera, please release a 3D with exactly the same specs, only in a smaller body (like the 1V) with a few less frames per second (say... 6fps) at $3500. I'll buy 2.

:-) Thats it. And that is what they will do, I guess.

So now we know the new camera is announced and will be available at March 2012.
I am sure Canon will not change any of the offered specs.
I feel fine with that. The thing left now is just to wait, til the 1DX is in peoples hands and see than if the given specs/promises fulfill what each of us expects.

At least we can discuss now, what price it will be. I think it will start at a level of 1D MK IV. Canon does not want to blow away the competitors solutions only. They want back the marked leadership and do huge sales.

Yeah, when I found where I had read it I nearly didn't post where! I don't particularly find it useful either.

It's a body tailor-made for the 2012 Olympics. That should be pretty obvious. Everything--and I mean everything--from the AF, the frame rate, the processing speed, the low-light ISO performance, dual CF, even the wired Ethernet jack...it's all for the Olympics.

Agree totally. And I would also prefer a "3d" as you say. I would rather that than the 1dx. However, if that doesn't happen, I'll get a 1dx. It'll do me for years (if my arms can take the strain).

What I'd ideally not get is a 5diii, which will almost definitely have less overall focus performance. While it might be enough for most, the one thing I've realised for my wedding photography is that quick and accurate focussing is incredibly important for my style, and even if the 5diii gets 7d focussing, I just think I'd rather go one notch up and get 1 series quality focussing. Getting the shot for me as it happens is incredibly important. The kiss straight after their wedding doesn't happen twice..

The brochure I just downloaded from Canon Australia's site has "TBC" beside "Weight" in the specifications table. Really? Don't they have a set of kitchen scales?

It also says nothing about battery life, which, with all that CPU power, I imagine will be less.

I'm going to hazard a guess that battery life won't be an issue for me, but weight *might* be.

I currently have a 5dii with battery grip which is far from light, and it may be the 1dx adds "only" a couple of hundred extra grams on to that (looking at the weight of the 1ds3), but I do want to feel it with a 70-200 on first before I hit the "buy" button.

[quote.... I just think I'd rather go one notch up and get 1 series quality focussing. Getting the shot for me as it happens is incredibly important. ....

+1.

As much as I wouldn't mind just a few more MP on the 1Dx, having more resolution doesn't mean much if the image ain't in focus. Better high ISO performance is certainly welcomed for low light situations for both wedding events and sports.
