Excellent body if coming from the 5D or 1DIII but the ISO and FPS are not needed for the shooting I do with the 1DsIII, while is normally evenly lighted events.

Mmm well if its a half to full stop better than a D3s with 50% more pixels that sounds like a camera which when final images at print or web sizes is way better...way..

This question is purely out of interest and curiosity so may I ask why you need/want such a high pixel count?

Super detailed A2 prints
Very large prints
Cropping ability

In my photography, I am fascinated by textures and [hm, what is the english term for "Stofflighet"], any Norwegian speaking english experts, please help me out. I have found that large prints from my 5DII, even when the sharpness is perfect, are lacking in the rendering of quality of surfaces.

Until the D4 is announced?

It may be an incredible camera but in essensce it's a D3s with a new chip, very little feature wise that Nikon hasn't had for 3 years. Assuming the D4 will follow with their lead in high iso and will have a megapixel bump I very much doubt this is the time to play a one upmanship game comparing to a older camera. Let's just be happy with what we've got if it fits our needs without it needing to be better?

Therefore, we better see first how that baby does in the hands of keen and independent photographers.

Yep, Canon certainly dropped a b*ll**k with the 1D3 Peter, but the 1D4 is a vast improvement. But, as we've both mentioned, the proof of their claims of even better image quality and AF performance is when we get unbiased, hands on experiences available. Time will tell!

I am not a native english speaker either, but I suppose something along the lines of textureness, probably not a real english word. But perhaps enough that someone with english as first language can work on?

Ah OK! I'd like to know what "Stofflighet" means!

Stoff have different meanings among them texture and fabric

lighed more or less translates to "ness" (like sweetness)

English has many words for just about anything, yet 1:1 correlations with other tongues are sometimes difficult to find.

I'd translate "stoff.." as "material/surface feel".

Um, am I the only one who is saying WTF about an announcement of availability in only 5 months time (03/12)? Very un-canon like is it not? Almost sounds like they are pushing a press release long before the camera would have reached a stage which would have warranted it.

Yes indeed they handled it appallingly, but let's not forget most were fine and I can say my 1D III is in just about every way a better camera than my 1D II and I thought that damn good.

Thanks for the help and interest!

I can try to describe how "Stofflighet" is used in the Norwegian photographic tradition.

It is the sensation of seeing, then experiencing the quality of and almost being able to feel like touching of the surface of an object in the photograph. It can be of fat and shiny leather, or the wooliness of woolen clothes, or the exact grittyness of rocks, or the structural fragility of millions of sand grain, or the dry fibres of wood, you can go on and on.

Sort of thing we used to laugh at Nikon for doing.

If Nikon goes ahead with a 36 megapixel D800 and then starts releasing immediately then can we assume the boardrooms have swapped?

Interestingly, despite some predictions, no lenses were announced in conjunction with this body. Rather disappointing, but oh well. *shrug*

There is more to this than meets the eye. The price, the lack of megapixel madness, the ridiculously long wait till release. I've got a feeling this is only part one of a raft of new stuff...

I expect lens announcements later, maybe 1 this year but a few more well before Olympics. Maybe we'll finally hear something about availability and pricing of 200-400 f/4.
