They're going to begin filming "Indiana Jones and the Search for the 24-70L mk2"

Or, a trully historic event, someone has used the direct print button.

Priceless!
But wait, I've used one sometimes; on my aunt's Powershot it can be (and has been) reconfigured for exposure compensation and whatnot. Does that count?

No and what % of the market do they represent. Most people are using crappy netbooks, or notebooks of which the vast majority are still stuck on that useless 1366 x 768. Really only small % of people have need for 2560 x 1440/1600. Even if the price dropped dramatically I don't see the uptake being high. For me the more res the better. I'd love a 4K monitor.

At home, I use a 27" iMac (2560x1440 pixels) and a 20" iMac (1680x1050) hooked up to a 20" ViewSonic LCD (1680x1050). IMHO, 20" is the most commonly used LCD size (1680x1050 pixels). At work, I have two 20" LCDs both running at 1920x1080. I believe most content creators have 20"+ LCDs, while most content consumers use iPads and Netbooks and laptops which run from 1024x768 to 1400x900 pixels.

It's either a 5DIII with AF in video mode or it's a new camera to compete with RED...

Who knows, it might be something with Digic V and CMOS MKII or whatever Canon calls it

It's probably going to be a video product, not a dSLR-type. They have been extremely late with updating the 1ds IV and they probably still will not do it.

Maybe it'll be like Nikon's big announcement in August?

Really, I don't know a single person outside a few forum nuts that haves one. Most of them complain text is too small even using 1920 x 1080 on a 24" monitor. They maybe easy to buy, but they'd represent a fraction of a percent of the user base. Also 4K video is 4192 x 2086, so > 8MP, a far cry from a 2560 x 1600 monitor's 4MP. The next step at least should be 2K video, which current high end monitors could accommodate.

Also most people would rather display this on their 50" TV than a 27"/30" monitor.

Huh? "forum nuts"? Nice....

I don't know anyone with a "2550x1600", but I know several with a "2560x1600" monitor, including me.... I've also talked to people that run dual 30" monitors, and none of them complain about text, or want to run things through their TV...

Once you've used a 30" monitor, looking at a small 20"-24" is rather limiting... For development I can open code editors, browsers (many), client docs, ect. without making things too small to see... Try it, you might like it...

Regarding the original post, the first sign we've had that there may be new bodies is the release of the P&S cameras with Digic 5... These are the test beds before Canon releases the chips in higher end products. while in the past it has always taken many months for the chips to appear in revised DSLRs, it may be sooner this time if they've done more testing.

It will be a camcorder, not a DSLR.

I'm surprised no one has suggested that Canon has bought RED and will be doing a combined digital technology assault on the entertainment industry, eventually spilling over into consumer/pro-level cameras like a redefined 1Ds4 and 5D3.

Never happen. Jim Jannard (Owner of RED and Oakley) would sink his own ship before he'd ever let that happen. I'm a cinematographer and spend quite a bit of time on the RED forums... and so does Jim.

"The story begins". The DSLR story began long time ago and Hollywood location is another "tell". So very little chance that it will be a new 5D or 1Ds camera. As most likely it will be something video/movies related.

Agree...There would be no other reason for the 'Hollywood' announcement if it wasn't 'cinema-video' related.

I seem to recall people getting all worked up about some announcement by Canon Sweden and it turned out to be a copier. So I am going with that.

"Story begins" so it must be something new. My bet is mirrorless system, with direct print on Facebook button.
