I would then have to compensate for the price, so the lens would have been priced at $3k

Im really surprised this lens is still out there.
I mean, the economy must really suck or something doesn't make sense.

I doubt it, but in case you may be interested in a 70-200 VR1 and $$, I will buy a second VRII at that price.
