Getting my 300mm f/4 in the mail next week and I'm curious if anyone has had success with this combination? I like that the Kenko permits AF to operate but naturally there's no point in autofocus if the images produced are too soft to begin with.
It is a common problem that people forget there were AF lenses from 1986 until 1992 when the N90 and AF-D lenses appeared. Some AF lenses in production before 1992 were never upgraded to AF-D.
I have the Kenko and Tamron 1.4x Pro or whatever the best version is. They are too similar to say which is best, though there are some slight differences in CA depending on the prime lens. The 300/4 AF-S solved some optical and mehcanical problems, save for the crappy tripod collar.
You should check the AF function for noise. Some of the old 300s may require lubrication of the gear train.
Holy cow, that's gorgeous. Which model of Nikon TC are you using specifically? I assume you don't find the manual focus to be too much of a burden with the D7k?
The TC-14B is the correct Nikon TC for that lens. I thought you wanted AF though. In the old days the 300/4 AF was commonly used with extension tubes for semi-macro work. That lens does not focus too close so it is not ideal for range, but the results are good (reasonably flat field and coverd by typical mid-small apertures).
Can't speak on the Nikon stuff, but back when I was with Canon I had this combo and it worked quite well. Pixel peep and I'm sure you'd find issues, but I found the images plenty sharp wide open with extender.
I have a Nik. 1.4 and the KenkoPro 1.4 (for my 80-200 2 ring), testing both on my 300 AFS I did not see much of an optical difference, the Nikon is better built IMHO.

Will the Nikon AF both your 80/200 and 300 ?. In other words i believe the Kenko (I have ) will AF both screw drive and those lenses with motors in the lenses - whereas the Nikon may not do both. My whole point being the Kenko, owning one, will do both, and very well. Just a clarification point, not an arument of course.

I have both the 80-200 2.8 and the 300 F4 screw drives- and indeed the kenko 1.4 does work well on both. I also have the Kenko 2X and it works very well on the 80-200.
