I think they said they made feedstock for animals there, and even exported it to West Germany at the time.
What I really found most remarkable is that the plant was only shut down in 2001! Look at it...

Funny, cant help think that this is what "some kids at deviantArt" strive for by adding textures etc to images to achieve the weathered grungy look. Only difference is, here it is for real :-)

But ... the Chemiefabrik Rüdersdorf was definately not an easy location for me. Not much color and lots of very harsh high contrast light. Therefore I shot mostly details with longer lenses (my most used lens was 50mm). Here are some images of the graffitis:
