p.18 #1 · Rokinon/Samyang 35/1.4 Picture Thread

The Canon lenses were not needed after I stopped shooting motorsports in 2001. It was a 7 year run, and after that I had no use for the Canon glass any longer. The depreciation on all that stuff (14mm, 35-350mm, 20-35/f2.8, 70-200/f2.8, 200/f1.8, 300/f2.8, 600/f4,) was going to be pretty dramatic, without any real opportunity to make the gear pay for itself any longer. In fact, it never did pay for itself when I did shoot motorsports, but it was almost a break-even operation in the end. I did this all part time, and more or less stumbled into it through my early web work when hardly anyone had a scanner and could put things online.

Looking back, I think I stopped at exactly the right time, as the money left the sport and digital junk become the norm of what people wanted from event coverage (we did use a Nikon D1 in the end - those images hurt to look at today...). There never was any money in shooting news anyway, but the money in advertising died together with the magazines that used to exist in paper, which pretty much happened in 2000/2001. Big agencies like Allsport and Getty came in as well, pricing the independents out of the market and offering distribution you could not match. I just packed my gear and went back to my day job and am glad I did it.

It was a good time, though.

Hi all,
Just to check, does anyone with the EOS ver focus beyond infinity?
I was told the lens was made that way, is that true?

Thanks
Justin

Yes, Canon and other makers lenses usually focus slightly past infinity. But the adjustment should be close, not a ton a slop, just enough to allow adjustment and expansion/contraction.

Yes, it goes past infinity. I feel they simply didn't want to try to calibrate the infinity stop
on a copy-by-copy basis, espcially since Canon bodies have some tolerance to their
registers distance. Samyang has left slop in the inifity stop, but at least it doesn't fall short
of infinity.

I wish they would hurry up and start shipping that 24mm lens! I have more use for it than the 35mm.

Hi does anybody know how to adjust focus on the lens? Mine focuses past infinity and I would like to adjust it to my camera, for quicker infinity focus.

I noticed The Digital Picture has released samples from the Samyang, and an interesting comparison with the Zeiss 35mm 1.4:

Cool stuff, Romain.

I don't know anything about adjusting the focus, unfortunately...
