Hello,
Anyone have both of these cams at the same time?
I read that there seems to be a preference for the 5DC colors over the 5D2.
Anyone have any direct comparison photos showing the differences?
Cannot post processing make each the same?
5D produced more natural looking Caucasian skin tones for me. I have adapted the 5D2 accordingly in LR (which produced Caucasian skin tones too red for me). Then I moved on. The 5D2 is a better camera.
From the many reviews I have read is that the 5dc has equal or better image files with lower ISO. Also the AA filter with the 5dc is weaker so images SOOC are sharper.
I was shooting some clouds and the 5D2 didn't handle the brightest highlight details. The next day I used my 1Ds original model and there was a lot more detail in the highlights. I had a 5D1 for a while but not at the same time as the 2 so I couldn't compare.
I'm surprised to see that this thread has been resurrected...
I shot the 5D for over two years, and I have since shot the 5D2 for nearly three years. I still own the 5D, which I use as a second camera and backup.
If I felt that the 5D produced better "colors" or was better in any other way I would use it as my primary camera and demote the 5D2 to "second/backup" status. However, that thought never crosses my mind.
In every way imaginable, the 5D2 at least equals or exceeds the performance of the 5D. Higher ISO performance is better. When used carefully and with good optics it can produce somewhat higher resolution images. Live view allows much more precise manual focus and many other advantages. The dust reduction system is very useful and greatly reduces the frequency of manual cleaning. It does video. Dynamic range is as large or larger.
I'm fairly particular about image quality, as my target output is always print. When I go back and review raw files from the time around when I got the 5D2, I often cannot see any visible difference in "colors" that would be an obvious clue to which camera I used. (In most cases, I check the pixel dimensions in ACR to see which camera it was.) Much of the supposed "color difference" is simply due to the need to use slightly different optimized settings for raw conversion.
The banding kerfuffle is one of the most unfortunate forum memes that I've encountered. Anyone who thinks that this is a real issue (as opposed the subject of heated and overwrought forum arguments) should simply look at the photography of professional photographers who use the camera and decide whether they see any evidence at all of this supposed problem.
Sometimes I hear that the 5D is "sharper" than the 5D2. This is nonsense. I chalk it up to people comparing 100% crops and failing to take into consideration the fact that they are looking at smaller areas of the 5D2 images "more closely." (A 500 x500 section of a 21MP 5D2 image comprises a smaller portion of the overall photograph than does a 500 x 500 section of a 12MP 5D image.)
Both are excellent image making devices, and both can produce and have produced excellent photographs. In many ways and for many purposes the image quality is essentially equivalent. In those cases where it is not, the 5D2 is better, though often by a tiny increment.
are you saying your 5d2 doesn't have banding issues at low ISO? let say clean no banding at all?
I am talking about directly viewing a 5d2 raw file., not converted jpegs or pushed jpegs.
Please do understand that I shoot only from base ISO to 1600, from what I've seen even at 5d2's ISO 100, for me is not the IQ I am looking for.
The features you mentioned are all pluses... but in the end it's all the IQ. If you can guarantee me that 5d2 doesn't banding issues... I'll buy it -- this is the reason why I ask here, I need a new body.
When I changed over to the 5D2 and did some comparison shots between them before I sold the 5Dc I really saw very little difference in image quality (talking about 100ISO landscape shots here). Main difference is resolution.

To get the banding issue to show, you have to seriously mess around with exposure, to the point where you're trying to rescue a terribly underexposed image. Especially at low ISO.
It's a good thing internet photographers don't run Canon!

what's the reason why you let go the 5d1?
I didn't use it because the 5D2 was better in so many other ways - ie MUCH better screen which made live view landscape composition and shooting a dream. In any case I bought a 7D for birding which is my back up camera now.
bushwacker wrote: It is confirmed!!! Low ISO banding is well documented. For now I will stay away from this camera. Adios 5d2.
I shot a 5D as my only camera for 4 years. I bought a 5DII and shot both side by side for 6 months. After this lengthy test, I sold the 5D and bought a second 5DII.
I was quite satisfied until I read this post. How could I have made such a huge mistake? How could I have shot both for years and never discovered this huge problem? I'm so upset. Now I'll have to sell both!

Hmm, I've had the 5DII for a week now and I'm very upset to find out about this banding nonsense... All of the 12X18" prints I've been doing look so good. Oh well! Guess I'll have to sell it....
And this is the well documented proof? sometimes the internet makes me sad.
Seriously, at 1600 ISO I can not create any sort of noticeable banding. I even did that retarded 100% fill-light thing. Still no banding. Maybe I'm just distracted by the outstanding image quality I'm getting... Who knows?
