The guy with the kitty avatar from a few pages back. Not sure if he has been banned, but Fred deleted a post in which he started using the f word. He hasn't posted since.

So, on the basis of one deleted post, and its author not continuing to post in this thread, you immediately jump to the conclusion that this person has been "banned?" And now you backtrack and say, "Not sure if he has been banned." No wonder nobody can get you to back up your claims with real evidence. If your "reasoning" about something as simple as claiming members are being banned because of this thread doesn't pass even the most superficial scrutiny, there's no hope for enlightening you.

A cursory search for the profile of the individual in question, and a very simple search of their post history, clearly reveals that they are still active.

Don't bother apologizing for your silliness, it's not like you were going to anyway.

He isn't talking about me. He was referring to dudemanppl, who I think is just bored with this thread and has since decided to move on to other things. I would have too, if it weren't for the fact that I hate letting people who are wrong continue to spew their falsehoods and exaggerations like a disease of the mind.

I've said it before and I will say it again: if you want to evangelize about Zeiss lenses, go do it in the alt forum. That's what it's there for.

I find nothing wrong with discussing different lens choices in the Canon forum. If someone wants to evangelize about any lens ( Zeiss or L-glass ), I have enough brains to make my own decisions and not let myself get all worked up.

It is actually quite easy to skip threads that upset you.

Well, that might be easy for you to say and do.

With some others it is often as if all four wheels are about to fall off.

The other images in the alt thread, at least those I've seen that were linked here, are extremely poor comparison images while Aravind's are actually comparable, using the same lighting and similar enough framing.

Ok, so you are making this conclusion based on a single image then. Thanks for clarification.

I thought he had been, then corrected myself. Fred must have let him off with a warning. My point was that this thread seems to be upsetting people.

I have totally backed up my claims. What is your contribution?

Even though Aravind provided several other comparisons (which I linked twice in this thread) the pair of images he posted in this thread are plenty enough to get a general idea of how the two lenses perform and are far better examples than what I saw on the alt forum. Perhaps actually clicking the links will clarify further for you

I think you're the evangelist, I shoot both Canon and Zeiss lenses and love both. Can you claim the same?

I claim that you are irrationally biased toward Zeiss lenses and make statements about relative optical performance that are not supported by evidence. That is all. If you haven't figured that out by now, we have nothing further to discuss.

Can you back this claim with evidence?

Not everything can be measured. Can you measure if food tastes good? Similarly with Zeiss and Canon there is a difference and it is up to peoples personal preference. If you don't see any difference then that is your prerogative.

Let's just agree to disagree.

The hypocracy in this place cracks me up. If someone posted a crop of the 85 1.8 against the 85 II, and said "don't know what the fuss is about, they look the same", most of the the guys here would roll their eyes. Talk about missing the point.

Sorry, Kumar...what is your point, again ?
If your point is that you feel certain "presence" in your Zeiss 100 f/2 images, I'd say "cool" to that, and then we all depart from this thread as friends, yes ?

The differences are less than would be masked by anything other than excellent technique. Zeiss' great forte is micro-contrast, but most of that difference can be resolved in PP. Maybe if making A2+ prints the differences would be a bit more noticeable, but nothing shown here demonstrates a more than a small advantage to the Zeiss. You get the Zeiss because it is brilliant @ f/2 lens and as a bonus focuses quite close. I would use it as a more generalist tool that the 100L, but the 100L also excels outside of the macro regime and IS is very worthwhile IMO.

Your own words in this thread serve as the evidence for my claim. Specifically, your use of vague terminology such as "presence" and "3D effect," without addressing specific and controlled testing, as well as a complete disregard for the counterpoints that others including myself have raised, are among the reasons why I find you biased.

Not that I expect you to acknowledge or accept this--people don't like to be called biased, or told that their opinions are merely expressions of subjective preferences. You haven't been able to provide any objective comparison that conclusively demonstrates this "presence" thing that you speak of. Nobody else in this thread has seen what you see.

Not everything can be measured. Can you measure if food tastes good? Similarly with Zeiss and Canon there is a difference and it is up to peoples personal preference. If you don't see any difference then that is your prerogative.

See, that's a cop-out. You want to put forth this claim that your lens is better because of some vague characteristic that you call "3D effect" or "presence," and then proceed to defend your viewpoint by saying such a thing is intangible and unmeasurable, and visible to only some people. If you want to state your subjective opinion, you should qualify it as such and use more balanced language, rather than trying to pass it off as objective fact, which is what you have been doing throughout this thread. Then, when confronted with this, you ignore and deflect, trying to accuse others of bias in the opposite direction. And that is the reason why I take exception with your posts.

The hypocracy in this place cracks me up. If someone posted a crop of the 85 1.8 against the 85 II, and said "don't know what the fuss is about, they look the same", most of the the guys here would roll their eyes. Talk about missing the point.

It's spelled "hypocrisy."

And it's not hypocritical to point out when others are making exaggerated claims which are not supported by actual evidence. It is, however, hypocritical to accuse others of being biased in order to draw attention away from your own inability to produce evidence to support your case.

As for comparing the 85/1.8 and 85/1.2L II, I have owned both lenses. From about f/2.8 and slower, the differences are negligible. From f/1.8 - f/2.8, the L is very very slightly sharper, with less vignetting (to be expected given their designs), but again, unlikely to be of much consequence in practice. Almost the entire purpose of owning the 85L is to shoot it at apertures faster than f/1.8, where one cannot make a comparison with the 85/1.8 because it doesn't go that fast. I wouldn't have bought the 85L if all I wanted to do was shoot f/1.8 or slower. Each lens has its advantages and disadvantages, and even the most ardent supporters of either lens acknowledges that. But what we're getting from Zeiss users is that the 100MP is supposed to be some miracle lens with some vague "rendering" characteristic that only they can see, and does something much better than the 100L; and ignoring everything else that is different about these two lenses, to the point of refusing to acknowledge the 100MP's clear shortcomings. That's not a balanced assessment.

Hi PetKal, we'll always be friends.

That is not my point. In all my posts I have never touted the look (Call it 3-d, presence, whatever) as an advantage or disadvantage. It is a characteristic.

The point is one lens is versatile in one way: AF, 1:1, weather sealed, IS.
The other is versatile in another, sharp @ wide open.

They are very different tools.

The sharp @ f/2 allows the Zeiss to be used for shallow DOF applications. For many users of the Zeiss this is a critical feature.

Like with 85 L II, the look at wide open is its main differentiator, disregarding other nuances like build quality, colour, rendition etc.
