p.51 #1 · Zeiss Lens Photos and Discussion

Processing an event I took for two friends running the Spartan Race 2011 NYC!

I actually just used the 85mm prime the whole event even though I brought a zoom with me. Did not bump saturation at all, added some contrast due to the overcast conditions.

Sony A850 + Zeiss ZA 85mm F1.4

Full set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/flypenfly/sets/72157627667204309/show/with/6199352589

Pics may appear not sharp in the slideshow due to Flickr upsizing 1024 images to your browser.

Hmm really?

Yup, it was AF-S with a -5 micro adjust that I got from a Lens Align.

On the fire jumps, I focused actually on the middle point of the fire.

Yeah. But you can't see it? You've got the big images... So if you can't see it in those then I'm either wrong, the processing did something weird, or my eyes are goofy.

It looks to be front focusing a lot - or whatever you call it - focused on the camera-side of the subject; leaving the subject (or what I think is the subject) dull and OOF looking.

Focus point is between him and her.

Focus point seems to be about 2 to 3 meters in front of the fire's edge. The dirt and grass reveal it.

Same here. Her fist has not yet entered the sharp part of the focal plane. It's another meter in front of her fist yet.

His face needs to travel another 1 to 2 meters to be in the sharp zone it seems. At quick glance I see OOF - with careful study confirming it.

Two others too but I dunno what you focused on for sure and it's difficult to describe in few words. But that should do it. So just my eyes being goofy, or?

How about a sample of Pixel bender? It won't be a Zeiss lens...but I can show you some examples.

Pretty neat effect, but… (here it comes) this is a Zeiss lens thread. How about starting another thread, or using a Zeiss lens?

I see some AF inaccuracies on my iPad but bot as bad as bif sees them

IMHO, lens align is good only if you shoot at close range. For me, I test at both close range and infinity. Most lenses behave differently at different distances. That is why conurus conversion of N lenses includes AF micro adjustment possibility at close, medium and long range.

Thanks Mike, Thanks AhamB. That last one was just conversion and typical post but it got me wondering about some of the one-shot-artsy-fartsy tools. I thought this looked cool, even if it contains little photographic merit by itself:

Amazing.

sorry Carsten, we just got off on a tangent...promise it won't happen again! I just thought that Bif's macro shots would look cool pixel bended....

Next time just provide a link (using the insert link button) to the shot you want to show instead of posting it as an embedded picture.

Hmm, my smiley seems to have gotten lost. It wasn't that big a deal, but I prefer to keep the thread clean. Also, the filter was quite neat, so maybe that topic deserves its own thread?

From a few weeks ago. I got off on some construction tangent. 100MP@f/4, 27 shots hand-held:

I see. I wanna try that multi-pano shots on a model, hoping that I could mimic the 200/2 lens' shallow DOF I wonder what it's gonna look like.

I am not sure how you would do that, to be honest. The 200/2 (I have one for sale in the B&S, btw) achieves narrow depth of field with a narrow angle of view. How would you emulate that by stitching? Normally you can use, for example, a 50/2 to achieve something like a 25/2, by stitching, but not the other direction.
