Yes, there's really a lot to like in Kyoto and you need at least a month of much walking to visit the more important temples only. So far, I'm most impressed by the Zen gardens I visited, they are really beautiful. I can just sit there and let the hours pass...
The shadows in the gardens are also very welcome, it is very hot here right now and not very comfortable to visit the temples at their open hours. Spring and Autumn must be really great for a stay here. The only advantage when staying here in summer is that not so many tourists are here (Ginkakuji temple was the only exception).
Thanks for the tip with the Ryonji temple, I just marked it on my map for a visit this weekend. If I have a few minutes time tomorrow (I'm on a conference here) I will try to get an appointment for the Katsura Rikyu. For online appointments it's already to late, but the Imperial Household Agency is just across the street and hopefully they have something free for friday.
Vincent - We were probably typing at the same time. I did not see your reply. I am salivating to see the beautiful Berlin Gallery shot. With 35, what more can I ask
Uiff - If you get a permission for Katsura, that would be a dream for many. I have studied their landscape long ago, just beautiful. a visitor house entry is made just a little too narrow so that all Samurais had to dismount their sword to get in. Regardless, I am looking forward to see more photos from Kyoto !

By the way I like the ethiopian portraits of Morfeus and Flypenfly. Very intense. I wished I had a talent for portraits. Unhappily I don't. All I can do is cups and houses. Well, and onions. Sometimes.
thank you, Vincent. The sad truth is, that I am only decently good at portraits, but my landscapes or cityscapes are nothing to write home about.
I am moving to Berlin by end of this year, so you can possibly teach me to take cityscapes
Vincent, I think you might be better at cityscapes. My real strength is details, as you have observed, and recently I am doing okay with greenery. I have had the idea bouncing around my head for a bit to try to arrange a Berliner Fototreffen sometime. There are the three of us, Bernhard, Ulff, and I think some more too, and if we time it right, Boris might join us. We could meet maybe every three months or so, have a cup of tea or coffee, go for a photo stroll, and then maybe have a bite to top it off? I suggest Brauhaus Lemke for the first evening meal
Well, we have some sort of initial consensus I'll ask Boris and Bernhard, in case they are not reading this thread, and then we should ask Ulff, and maybe we can choose a date. This weekend is out for me, but the following one would be a possibility for me. I don't know if you are already here, Heinz, or if Boris is here, though. Maybe we should start another thread for this topic (and for Vincent's very nice 16-35 shots ).

Sound good to me and I would like to join, if time allows. You mean Brauhaus Lemke at Hackescher Markt (there is also one in Charlottenburg)?
Pleasantly surprised by 80-200/4 actually. Initially thought it would be somewhat slow and hard to focus with Ee-s screen on 5DC, but rather easy even up to f8 in good light. Great sharpness and contrast.
Carsten, thank you very much. While 35-70/3.4 really speaks for itself, indeed 80-200 is worth its price. I remember somebody mentioning it is a bit soft WO, so I shot mainly at 5.6. What do you think about that?
Find it easy to focus and handle as well - a great travel zoom.
