Decided to extend my shooting from firm ground to boat this summer. Have tried few times already and I found focusing and composing to be problematic/difficult since boat is never static, always moving or at least rotating. I have Canon 24-70mkI and also tried borrowed 24-70mkII, but didn't like neither (colors, bokeh-DOF-transitions, etc. being all wrong) so there really is no Canon option for me. So I needed other Zeiss solution than "Zeiss ZE lenses + Canon 5DmkII + Live view", which have served me well on firm ground.

I was very close of purchasing SonyNEX-7, but seeing how bad it's autofocus is AND other issues with the camera I decided not to go that route. Also NEX would have meant smaller sensor, which sounded quite scary. Then running out of options decided to try 2nd hand Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 2.8/24-70 ZA SSM and Sony Alpha (850). Special thanks for Edward Karaa giving good information about 24-70.

Of course at the first day I got my hands to "new" lens it's raining and terrible overcast weather

. However I'm rather pleased to test shoot results, considering the quality of the light. With help of autofocus I can shoot similar kind of images from boat what numbers #7 and #8 represent, really look forward for the weather to clear up.

My quick conclusion from your photos. Most Sony shooters with ZA lens dont know how to process photos right. Cause yours look every bit as Zeissy as they should.

I was always kinda suspecting its not Sony AA fault, but more in processing.. as your pics show, its exactly like that..

Gonna buy A900 probably..

a850/a900 RAWs should not be very hard to process correctly. I didn't do anyhing except reduced exposure (the LCD on camera didn't show photos as bright as they were in computer) and even without doing any camera specific stuff in Apple Aperture I can see that the CFA (Color Filter Array) is better for color separation then the weak ones used in Canons. I don't know (or care) how Lightroom processes Sony files, I would rather use even dcraw.c before using Lightroom and it's hideous RAW processing (just my personal experience, feel free to like it, everyone of us have their own preferences...)..

AA is very strong - hard to say but my feeling is that actual resolution without sharpening might even be less than 5DmkII. Naturally with convolution sharpening more can be extracted as long as ETTR is used. My Topaz trial period ended so I haven't yet tried the sharpening.

If you want to review RAW files before buying a900 let me know and I'll throw few to dropbox.com for you.

I was more thinking about lack of "3D" in most A900/ZA users photos and about very visible 3D in yours. I know 3D needs a bit of PP, but it cant be "made".. its either there or isnt. And apparently it is.. (which as consequence means it will be there with and "3D" lens).

I have like 2 files from A900, but nothing great exactly for evaluating quality. I would be happy if you uploaded some of that good stuff you do.

From what I saw, I agree pretty much on everything you just wrote..
