p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mamiya 120mm f/4 Macro A

Just received my new Mamiya 120 f/4 Macro A and made some test shots yesterday - would like to have done more but too much wind for decent macros. However, what a beautiful lens for macro! F/4 is every bit as sharp as f/16 - and the addition of f/22 and f/32 allows great depth of view with keeper IQ. I have a funny feeling this is going to be my new primary macro lens.
Dave

Here is f/4 compared to f/16. F/4 is sharp!

A couple more shots from yesterday - I think at f/16 and f/22. I love the depth of field this is rendering.

The last shot looks great! I've been thinking hard about getting this lens. Missed two deals on ebay where the lens went for 160-200 euros. Crazy...

It's a fine lens. Many of the images posted here were taken with it,

One more shot from today of Grape Hyacinths at maximum magnification. I'm surprised how good the IQ is at f/32. I also did some head to head comparisons with my Tamron 180mm macro, which is a sharp lens - and the Mamiya was marginally better at all apertures.

There's a 120/4 on ebay now, BIN $279! Item # 330566901629.
If I hadn't just bought a C/Y 100/2.8 Makro-Planar, I'd probably already have clicked that BIN button.

Edit: it's gone now.

If in good shape $279 would be a great buy. Here are two more shots - one taken at f/32 and the other taken at f/11.

Dandelion at f/32 (5D) - and yes I know its time to clean the sensor!

Yes, $279 was a pretty crazy low price. I hadn't seen such a good deal on this lens for a while, and I had ebay email me at every new offer for this lens for quite some months.

Love the dandelions, btw.

Bee porn!

The Mamiya 120 F4 is THE macro lens for me. I got mine much cheaper than the lowest price mentioned here. It had a mount problem that I fixed in 5 min but everything else was superb.

I'm glad to see that a tribute thread has resurfaced. This lens is very much overlooked.

Superb sharp, even with tubes (this is without, however)!

Stefan,

Looks real good from here! This thread was the reason to "pull the trigger" on one my youngest son found for me in Reno, NV. It is on the way as I write this, with the Mamiya to EOS adapter. It does not have the lens hood, however, but it seems that the front element is well-recessed.

I can thank Dave and Jim for my recent LBA also...

BTW: Where was the race

Regards,

Edd

You won't regret it! And you're right, the front lens is deep behind the filter wear.

It was the epic 24h race at the Nürburgring last weekend. 250 Cars on race, 25 km per lap. On this pic: Ferrari F458, Merc SLS, Porsche 911, Audi R8, BMW Z4.

Stefan,

Thank you for the quick reply/info. It looks like a real sleeper/great lens for my bug/flower/technical prototype image work.

BTW: We are big M-B fans here...my go-to car in Reno is a 1997 500SL (V8), and my youngest is getting the V-12 version through an estate sale by the end of the month.

Regards,

Edd
