Having had very little time to spend with Camera in hand I have been reduced to grabbing pics when I can while out on other chores but it has only been this weekend that I managed to get any decent pics. I had the 180mm on and I call this series my ode to the 180...

I like the last one best Mark but a 300 would have been better

As far as a mid range AF goes the 28-105d is nice and inexpensive. It is my only AF lens but it seems I rarely use AF

Silly boy... the fact the camera can handle only NINE non-CPU lenses is irrelevant when determining whether to expand your kit... as my kit proves. I thought the same thing until the tenth lens arrived. I quickly learning how easy it is to CHANGE a lens in the register. Trust me, the only thing that limits the number of MF Nikkors one owns is the number available to buy... And, of course, the amount of funds available to support this delightful venture. YMMV... :

You can pick up a sweet copy of a 35-70 f/3.5 AI-s for less that two hundred dollars. If you want an inexpensive AF zoom, you might want to consider the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 or the 28-70 f/3.5-4.5, either of which can be bought for the same amount. The first lens I bought after receiving the D700 was the 28-70 f/2.8 AF-s which is a great lens, but will cost closer to a thousand dollars, in part because its replacement costs ove fifteen hundred.

I have been rapidly convinced that the 180 f/2.8 EDIF is the best lens I've ever owned. Maybe the best lens ever made. Every time I go 1:1 on a shot I've taken with it, and I see all that detail and all that contrast and those amazing colors, I squeal like a little girl.

My first regret is that I didn't start using one 25 years ago. My second regret is that I didn't know how amazingly simple it was to use one on an EOS camera until about 6 months ago.

Which means you've got a great AF lens mounted on a Canon camera. Enjoy yourself, but remember we're celebrating MANUAL FOCUS Nikon lenses mounted on Nikon cameras. And that is what Mark is enjoying while taking the photos he shared with us. I note you haven't been very active on FM and wanted to make certain you understand what this thread is all about.

I assure you my 180 2.8 is quite manually focused.

I wouldn't have thought the particulars of the camera body would have mattered in a thread dedicated to the merits of particular lenses. Film, digital, FM2 or 40D, it's all about the glass, right? But okay, I see the door.

The 35-70mm f2.8 is supposed to be a good lens too.
