I got hold of an HS-12 for the 50 1.2, which also has a 52mm filter. The front cap snaps into the inside of the hood so you can leave the hood and cap on together.

Judging by the serial number this is one of the first ever sold. If this is to be believed then this was purchased in 1988 and has sat never used for over 24yrs. I would guess this thing was over 7K. How does one spend this kind of money and just forget about it.

While we're on the subject of this particular lens hood, I just wanted to mention that a 77mm lens cap works great on the hood itself. Making it easier than the standard type cap.

It looks like the HS-12 is also the "snap in" style. How exactly does that work? Is it similar to the older-style Nikon lens caps that have the threaded metal semicircle to engage the filter threads on the lens? I've always been leery of those, and swap them out for modern snap-in caps. I'd rather avoid having a sharp metal edge hovering millimeters away from my front element a dozen times a day. Plus, on a hood, it doesn't seem like they'd be as secure getting dragged in and out of camera bags, under coats, etc.

I was under the impression that the "snap in" hoods operated on the same principle, but if I'm mistaken don't be afraid to straighten me out. Maybe a picture of the back side of one of these hoods would be helpful.

Thanks Leighton, If it mounts on the DSLRs as is, no. Some lenses do some don't, depending on the thickness of the aperture ring and whether it is flush with the mount or goes beyond it, If it does not mount I will look for someone that can cut it professionally as the serial number is nothing special. This lens has the look I look for wide open, there is a good review here

Do you think the D600 is easier to MF than the D700? I will be making a decision TODAY on either of these, for my AIS lenses.

The D600 is newer technology, more pixels, etc (more than I need) in a consumer body, with oil and dust issues.

The D700 is several years old, will be used when I get it, and only 12mpx, but it is a proven workhorse in a strong body.

The oil issue bothers me...

I went from a D700 to a D600 and the viewfinder is the same
I like the D600 because I can crop better with the 24mp as I shoot wide most often.
The oil and dust issue so far is nothing that a good Rocket Blower hasn't been able to take care of
The only problem was getting used to was the setup and controls on the D600 as I came along with the D200,D300 and D700 way of doing things. It took about 2 weeks to get used to the D600
As you said go for the newer technology and it also weighs about 8 ounces less

I wouldn't stress too much about the oil issue either. I have the D7000 (first run) and the oil issue was FAR worse than the images I have seen with the D600. It took a trip into Nikon for a cleaning (and a repair, the shop I took my camera into to clean the sensor put a scratch on the sensor) and I have shot 4k images since, all weather conditions, and not a single drop of oil. The repair stated that the extractor arm needed to be cleaned...

exactly - I had some pretty annoying spots on my D7000 sensor after 2400 exposures. I never really cleaned it, though - rubber stamp tool was just easier to do than to break down and order the wet cleaning kit. I now will do that, since I plan to keep the D600 much longer. I don't really care if it leaks oil like an old Italian sports car - the images are so much better than what I got from the DX body that I'm willing to put up with that for the price I paid for the D00 kit + all the other goodies Adorama threw in over the holidays. I just got another $80 coupon from them and bought me a nice ND100 filter with that, which will soon get tested with some MF glass.

Well done Peter. I've no doubt you'll love the D600, if I'm to judge by what others are doing with the camera. I've been tempted myself, but then took a step back. My D700 still does the job for me.

Slap on those MF lenses and share some photos with us... of course, the latest weather forecast has a major storm beginning in Wisconsin and heading east. It might be better to stay indoors.

Looking good Reagan! You may finally have found a camera worth keeping... And that lens sparkles as well. Wide shots of the beach are definitely in order with that lens. Happy shooting. It is still below fifty degrees at the moment in S.F. We'll never compete with Florida on temperature, but when you're changing shirts after a day of intense humidity you can think of us with temperatures in the low eighties and virtually no humidity...

I've not had my surgery yet. Doing Physical therapy and going to see another specialist on March 4. But I am finally getting some relief and some pain free moments.

slushy messy wet icy "wintry mix" as they call it - just gray and ugly out there and not even a lot of snow to make that dramatic. I didn't even ride my bicycle today, that's how nasty this is.

got an MF lens question:

20mm f3.5 vs. 20mm f2.8: I read on the Bjørn Rørslett site that he feels my f3.5 version is not very good at infinity. Anyone else can confirm that? I need a good ultra-wide, yet packable lens for landscapes. If there's a distinct difference, I would sell the f3.5 and find me a 2.8.
