Are you guys ready for a new rebel or what?!

In all seriousness, an announcement is emminant--what it'll be is anyone's guess although I think its safe to say we'll see a new rebel and at least one lens with the possibility of a 60D. In any case I just figured I'd post this to get you guys all ramped up

Since Canon have just announced a new video CODEC very similar to the one Sony uses for XD-CAM, I think it might be a new video camera, not anything to do with an SLR.

I'd say it's going to be a video camera:

Ahhh, see I was looking at the ad as Canon's way to promote its DSLR video feature as I have noticed they have been playing their DSRL video commercials more frequently recently. A video camera seems definite...we'll know by monday.

I guess I'd think that if I lived under a rock too.

Maybe it's a dedicated video camera with a large sensor that uses EF and/or EF-S lenses!

Why? I answered the question accurately. I can't make a movie with a DSLR. Perhaps you can.

Yea, a video camera. Not sure why everyone read this as a DSLR announcement? I didn't get that when it popped up on CR a few days ago.

EF and EF-S lenses aren't really designed for movie making.

Well, why is Canon running DSLR commercials focused solely on the video feature? The ad doesn't necessarily discount a DSLR.

Not to mention dozens of other short films and documentaries...but EBH was clearly speaking on his own behalf.

Well it's for a professional video conference and the day before they had released a new codec for their "upcoming professional video camera". Just putting 2 and 2 together...(that from CanonUSA)

Maybe my thinking is too linear?

No, but lots of us have them.

Optically, I don't see an issue, - good glass is good glass. Mechanically, the USM focus system and the way the aperture works could cause problems. Or maybe not.

The issue is that manual focus and aperture are both pains and focus breathing frequently occurs too. People here may be making movies with their DSLRs (the quality of the cinematography is another issue), but that doesn't mean that making movies with a regular video camera and EF/EF-s lenses is going to be an attractive prospect.

Pierre,

Press release from Canon.com dated today -

http://www.canon.com/ir/release/2010/p2010feb08e.pdf

This one is a game-changer, the end of an era, we'll never look at our D-SLRs the same way again, I literally cannot contain my overflowing levels of excitement, am currently dancing around the room counting my pennies for the developments this will throw up in the next few months.
