I'm sure someone here has a version of the old FW on their computer. If not find someone with a Mark IV that hasn't updated and ask them to save a version to their computer and email it to you.

Chris, I believe all initial cameras were shipped with 104.FIR version, so it's not available for download anywhere.

Yep - I shot three basketball games on Friday night, about 3500 photos in all. My MkIV was focusing perfectly with 1.0.6.

Yes, that's correct

So far no problem with my 1.06 on swans and ducks over the weekend, I didn't notice any real difference but I have not used the camera much before the updated firmware, I also used the 500f4 with a 1.4 mounted. Ron

Not sure either. This has always been a problem in that Canon typically does not offer the initial FW for download. Nor do they ever advocate going back to an earlier version (which is something I have done many times with the old MkII). So if you are an early adopter there is no way to preserve or re-download the initial FW.

I just received my MkIV on Friday afternoon and after I confirmed that it wasn't DOA I went ahead and installed 1.0.6 before heading out to the games. I am usually hesitant to install new FW but I had not read any bad reports and given that Canon was so quick to release the fix I assumed it was warranted.

Thankfully it worked fine for the basketball games.

Perhaps it is just a quirk with the 500/4 lens. I know hindsight is 20-20 but if I had been you guys with three cameras and three lenses I would have left ONE of the cameras loaded with the old FW so you could do evaluations on your own. Who else is likely to have access to duplicate sets of cameras and lenses. Oh well.

Is it possible to pull the 1.0.4 firmware out of an upgraded body?

If there was one software download applied to the three cameras, there is a very slight chance that it was a problem. I'd download it again and seee if it makes a difference.

With CRC checks thatwould be done on the file as it is installed, it is almost impossible for a error to creep in, but not totally impossible.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't.
Historically, canon never provides the initial FW version for download.

Can we see pics that you guys shot that show the problem?

I've deleted mine, although symptoms are quite obvious they are MILES out of focus.....I'm not talking a little soft, it's focussed on the wrong part of the frame, etc I mean WAY OOF!

This does not sound good - another technical (and PR) disaster for Canon. Mine is working beautifully so no firmware upgrade for me.

I upgraded mine but I really haven't shot anything since... Makes me want to go shoot something lol

For what it's worth, I installed the new firmware the day it was released and I notice no difference. Ive only mounted the 24-105 and the 70-200/2.8 and both work just as with the last firmware. I think one way to get to rule out some factors would be to provide all of your custom functions and see if you have selected any variables that could interfere with autofocus tracking or rather with the autofocus tracking mode you think you are using. I understand you may not want to post those settings but it seems pointless to go on in a thread like this without more specific information. Your ability as a photographer is certainoly not in doubt, all anyone has to do is to look at your work, it's superb. I'm thinking that some custom function has been altered and you don't know it. Hope I'm not offending anyone but I just don't have an issue with the new firmware.

I also have been experiencing the same issues... I currently have a mark III and a IIn so i dont believe its user error because I'm very familiar with the 1 Series body.. Got my IV and installed the new firmware right way. Went out with my 500f4 to shoot incoming canada geese like i always do with my other 2 bodies.. I didnt get 1 usable image.. not even 1 close to being in focus.. all were way off. I had plenty of shutter speed and was using a full wimberly and the background is pretty clean.. i was shooting with CF settings pretty much the same as my mark III... I tried again this morning with the sportsshooter CF settings and a 400 f 5.6 prime with the same results... I have now reset my CF funtions to default and will try again tomorrow....

This is very frustrating... I cant understand why a 5000.00 body and an even more expensive lens would be so out of focus...

3 = 0
4 = 0
5 = 0

7 = 0
8 = 1 (also tried 2 which was rubbish)
9 = 0

11 = 1

13 = 2 (only works in one shot anyway)
14 = 1
15 = 0
16 = 1
17 = 0
18 = disable
19 = disable

Think I'll take my camera to work tomorrow with my 24-105 and try it out on some passing cars at lunchtime. At least I might be able to determine whether it's purely a problem when used in conjuction with the 500 F4

Thats a shame. I have yet to try any flight shots i did install the. new firmware but everything seems fine. sorry to hea.r the bad news
