So, putting all of this together, I suggest that there is the possibility that something else is going on other than a problem with the firmware.

Well, Les I’d suggest get your facts straight before posting, actually there were three guys: Scott, Greg and myself and that makes three….and I’m not starting any internet panic I’m just saying my camera does not work like it did before the upgrade…

Sorry to hear your 'trouble', hope you can work through it soon. I had installed the 1.0.6 firmware upgrade and it works fine. In fact, I had installed all the firmware upgardes with the MK3 also and never had any problems either. The MK4 is definitely a worthy upgrade from the MK3 for me even though I was very satisfied with the MK3 to begin with.

I am not sue if you did the MA for your 500/4 lens., I have tried three Mark IVs and all need some +MA [+4 to +8]to get the focus spot on for the 300/2.8L IS while the lens is perfectly with other bodies I have had, this applied for both one shot and ai servo.

Please clarify:

1. three different Mak IV bodies
2. three different 500mm f/4 lenses
3. all three bodies had f/w 1.0.6 installed
4. all three bodies had focusing issues
5. none of the bodies had focusing issues with 500mm f/4 lenses before upgrading to 1.0.6

Does that stae the problem correctly?

Yes...

Quick question. Did you each independently downloard the new firmware on 3 different computers and use 3 different cards for your cameras. And does the installation of new firmware have any effect on the microadjustment you all may or may not have done on that particular lens in the custom settings. Although I don't see how that would have any effect the speed of focus.
I can not imagine that there is more than coincidence going on here and you all must have done something together that affected all three cameras. Can you try one of the lenses on someone's 1D4 with the original firmware.
I updated the firmware the same day I received the camera so I have no frame of reference but am interested in what may have occured.
I guess, not such a quick question.

All upgrades were downloaded/done independently on three different computers and three different cards

Would you be willing to share how you set up autofocus on your cameras? What AF CF settings? (I assume AI.) What focus points (Auto AF point selection, Center, Manual AF point selection but not center, etc.)? Using DPP what AF points did it record as having used?

I am asking this because I was confused by my results from this past weekend. Confused in that what I was seeing in the VF (center AF point) was not what DPP showed me. I assume this is due to my not being familiar with DPP. But until I have more time to sort things out I am somewhat confused by the AF CF settings. It may be that the issues you are having occur with specific configurations of the AF system. Not suggesting its not a problem. Just that we may have a workaround if the issue is specific to certain setup.

I have no 1D4 but I heard from a friend that after installing the new firmware he had to redo the microadjustment of his lenses, the speed of focus however did no seem to be affected.

No, we didn’t swap the lenses. There was no need, we didn’t have any problems prior to the upgrade, in fact I was simply stunned by the performance of this camera....

If you reset the camera to original factory specs, does that reset the firmware to 1.04 or is 1.06 now integrated into the camera's DNA?

I got to use a mkIV with a 300 2.8 this weekend and it was great. But, the first thing I would have done is tried another lens if this happened.

Also, is it possible but I can't imagine what a coincidence it would be that you all triggered spot autofocusing and that slowed down the focusing?

I'm also having the same issue - Worked fine with the 1.0.4 firmware and went t*ts up with the 1.0.6 "upgrade".

I'm also using it with a 500 F4.

Has anyone managed to source a copy of the old firmware?

Don't know why Canon told you not to reinstall the previous firmware unless something has changed drastically between the Mark III and Mark IV (so do it at your own risk).

When they were constantly updating the Mark III firmware I had a similar problem with a firmware update and so I loaded both versions on my SD card and switched back and forth in the field several times and didn't have a problem.

The firmware I updated to (and switched back and forth to) was the one where they added a couple custom functions and changed the Joystick application. When I switched back and forth there wasn't a problem of any kind. When I reinstalled the old firmware the custom function and Joystick app went away and when I reinstalled the new firmware the custom function and Joystick app came back and worked just fine. I went back and forth many times in the field to test the new firmware and never had a problem. On the Mark III the new firmware overwrites the old the old will overwrite the new.

When I go to switch firmware, depending on how many versions I keep on the SD card, there is actually a scroll bar that lists all the firmware on the card so you can pick whichever one you want to install or reinstall. I asked a tech at Canon and he thought it worked because during the testing and production stages of building the camera the software engineers probably keep many versions of the FW on one of the cameras cards so they can switch back and forth to test any new changes made to the firmware and algorithms.

It's up to you but I didn't have a problem and now keep ALL new and previous firmware updates on my computer just in case I have to go backwards. I just load the two versions onto the SD card, at the root level, using a card reader and they show up on the camera screen when you pick the Firmware Update menu function. Be sure to switch to the SD card if that is where you put the FW. I'm using a Mac but it should be the same on a PC.

Again, this was on the Mark III and worked fine every time I've done it. The Mark IV might have changed but I don't know why it would ?? Do so at your own risk though.
