They have completely different character.

The Makro-Sonnar 100/2.8 is bar none the sharpest optic in the entire N series. It is sharper wide open at f/2.8 than N Planar 85/1.4 stopped down to f/2.8. You may experience double-edged bokeh at medium focusing distance, but this improves as you go into the macro range. Its autofocus is very slow and unable to catch most moving subjects.

Planar 85/1.4 has amazing capability to render e.g. the texture of garments realistically and with three dimensionality. At wide open it has a swirly dreamly look. The AF is reasonably fast.

Both lenses do not change length at any focusing distance, a design hallmark for the entire N-series with the sole exception of VS28-80/3.5-5.6 and a few very rare samples of the initial N Planar 50/1.4 production run.

N85 bokeh is very smooth and dreamy but not swirly, imho. Also my N 70-200 changes length with focusing distance too. Don't have N 70-300 but it probably does too.

But it can swirl:

So, the N85/1.4 swirls?
No PP.
This wasn't at MFD either...

I might have used the wrong word. I mean the bokeh has a certain characteristic to it and it feels like there is a circle occupying the center of the frame and the blurry corners somehow surround that circle in the center. It is not easy to describe with words. But sure dreamy it is.

I like the helmet photo, but I'd crop out the right side 25%.

Thanks Brian and that crop makes a lot of sense...also making the pic conform more to the 900w default on here.
