As any screw in metal hood owner knows, you have to remove the lens cap before putting on the hood. Not that I particularly am bothered by this, but often wonder if there was a lens cap out there that would snap onto the front of the metal hood itself, so that I don't continually have to batter the threads of my lens. Anyone know of such an animal?

The nikon 77 lens cap (pinch type) will cover the 85 1.8 lens hood - I use mine all the time!

The standard cap fits in the hood...not like it's difficult to get two fingers in there

As stated above, the 77mm cap works great. Only leaves some small marks on the inside of the hood, but nothing to worry about imho.

Just wondering if anyones knows if a larger cap will fit the hood of the 85mm f/1.4 like the 77mm cap fits the hood of the 85mm f/1.8?

What about a smaller cap fitting in the lens hood close to the front element like on the new lenses?

Don't mean to go against the grain here, but in what situations have you needed both the hood AND a lens cap on?

Maybe I am missing the obvious but my stock cap fits fine on my 85 1.8 with the metal good in place. I always leave the hood on as it is more a pain to screw and unscrew. Can you just not get your fingers in there to punch it on and off?

That's exactly what I do. I only leave the lens cap on for storage though, when I'm shooting I just throw all my lens caps into a pocket in my bag.

I never take the hood off. Its kind of like a bumper (if needed). The supplied pinch cap works well with hood mounted. Take care. bob

I'm not sure about others, but the only 62mm cap I have is one of the old style that you have to pinch on the outer edge to apply and remove. So, it can't really be used with the hood in place. I really like the idea of the 77mm cap on the hood.

I bought my 85 1.8 with the older style cap (the pinch on the outside), so it was nearly impossible to have the hood on and put the lens cap on. The only situation is when I need to store the lens in my bag (and am lazy to take the extra steps when starting to shoot ) This solution has proved marvelous for convenience, plus the 77mm cap was FREE because I had one laying around, versus buying a new nikon pinch cap.

AND it fits in my sigma 30 1.4 with the hood on as well

I have on my 50/1.4 and 85/18 lenses foldable rubber hoods and the normal lenscap, works perfect.
