I converted this to black and white to reduce background distraction, how could I further improve it?

Tim,

Sharp, sharp, sharp! Wonderful detail

I think the conversion serves well.

Changes? Try cropping ~ an inch or so off the top and 1/4 - 1/2 from the bottom for more of a pano to suggest motion. The blurred area at right is bothersome to me - I think because of distortion accentuated by the legs of the two folding seats/chairs. Guess there are three solutions: darken the reflections, correct the distortion, maybe crop a little from that side as a last resort, and of course #4 - let it alone

Nit: slight halo at horse's forehead?

A keeper to me..

regards,

Bob

really good shot, beautifully caught. it feels ever so fractionally over sharpened though.

Any chance of seeing the colour version?

bob, i think thats the horses white forehead flash your seeing rather than a halo.

Thanks for feedback and thoughts, I like your ideas. I'm at work so can only give a link to a muted colour version I have on my site, it's looks too messy now.

it has a 3 dimensional feel to it!
really nice.

maybe selectively blurring some of the busy background might help?

Tim,

I much much prefer the muted version - for whatever the means

What shutter speed did you use? The blur is so strong-it almost looks photoshopped or enhanced anyway. It does have a very nice dimensionality to it though with the horse/rider so sharp. Panning shots have less keepers, but when you get a good one you really get a stand out image.

Is this an image for selective color? Either trying to fully color the horse and rider and reduce the saturation of the background, or, more radically, try just the horse and rider in color?
I'm not generally a fan of selective color, but you have a very interesting image with successful pan and I'm thinking it might also reduce the draw to the busy background.

I like the color version best.

Excellent pan. The tack sharp horse and rider really stand out from the crowd (so to speak). Either works.

I was first impressed with the b&w, but am liking the color more and more...

I love this shot. The muted color version best. Only improvement I could possibly see is to crop about an inch off the top. The colorful background adds to it. They are too blurred to distract the eye for too long but with a crowd like that it adds to the excitement of the shot. Very nice panning shot to get. Interesting stirrups too, I assume they don't catch the feet in a fall.
