Hi, I recently acquired a D300 and am overall impressed, but still trying to work out the AF for sports like night football and basketball (high school and college).

I've been playing around with a variety of settings, but just curious what people have found works consistently well in these situations since there are so many variables on how the camera can be set.

Thanks so much,

Jeff

I did search and didn't come up with anything specific to this question, although I'm sure it is somewhere here to be found.

What lens are you using? That makes a BIG difference for night shots.

80-200 2.8 AF-S is the lens.

I use Canon for my work (newspaper photog) and haven't used Nikon since the D1h, so I'm just trying to adjust to the differences and options available and want to hear what others with experience have found to work so I can start there.

I use the same lense, its a great short lense for sports since its cheaper than the 70-200 and with sports you are usually using higher SS anyway so VR isnt as key anyway.

I personally use AFC with the dynamic 21 point area mode and the lock-on being short unless I anticipate someone often being in front of my subject but it seems to work as a delay when someone just runs quickly through the frame.
