I have been enjoying the recent run on impressionistic images that have appeared here on FM, especially those that involve moving the camera while the shutter is open. I remember falling in love with William Neill's "Impressions of Light" series a few years back, and anytime I am out with my camera I try to be aware of possible compositions using a similar technique.

I seem to get drawn to trees... the lines are obvious, and if the scene gets the right kind of light it can make for some interesting possibilities. Different seasons bring different colors, and I was especially interested in trying out this technique with the fall foliage colors. Most of my compositions simply involve moving the camera up and down during the exposure, usually somewhere in the range of 0.4 - 0.6 seconds. I would be curious if others find these type of images interesting?

I must be very linear. I really like the first one, but am not as drawn to the second. But, that's just me and has no bearing on art.

Love the first one, David. Love the vivid colors and vertical movement on it. Looks very cool.

Yes, there has been a cool run on this impressionistic and abstract type shots. Boy, Y must be feeling like a kid in a candy store enjoying everyone's efforts!

The first is my clear favorite here. That one is super cool. In #2 the curvature of the tree's is fine, it's the bit of white lines next to some of the trunks and in the upper left corner that distract my eye a bit.

Dave, like I mentioned, the first one is the bomb. The texture of the bark is in tact and there is great sense of depth. It still feels like a forest but a very different one.

Doug... thanks. Different strokes for different folks I guess. The wannabe artist in me made me do it

Bob, Craig, Ed, Ray, Jim, Dan, Zeph, Nikos and Y... thanks for all of the kind comments. I am a simple kind of guy, and this type of image definitely appeals to me. I especially like the fact that anyone can create these type of images anywhere. No National Park necessary... just the right combination of light, colors, shapes and movement.

Thanks... it is from a local park/forest along a common trail. I liked how the trees in the background added some depth, and how the texture in the foreground tree was maintained.

Speaking of William Neil, I met him yesterday shooting the meadows near El Capitan. What a guy !!! Humility personified ..

I like first one too. My mind is confused by it though, the whole "still photo evoking a sense of falling or vertigo" I think trips me out... I think in a good way! Definitely something to explore. thanks for sharing!!

Ernie... thanks. Holding the camera"straight on" to the scene allows for straighter lines, whereas panning the camera from low to high with a little twist results in the curvature of the lines.
