I'm wondering if anyone knows how to Canon 7D would compare to the Nikon D700 for landscape photos?

I've been thinking of swapping to the D700 for a while as it has fast autofocus, fast frame rate, full frame sensor and really great build quality. The 5D MII has the full frame sensor but is slow and not as well built as far as I know.

Since the 7D came out I have been curious if this might be a good option. I just can't see the smaller sensor outperforming the full frame, or could it

That's an interesting question. Generally, it is understood that if you can fill the frame, FF will provide higher IQ. But, in this case, the 7D has significantly more lph resolution (2500 lines vs. 2200), which could give you that extra fine detail (tree limbs, leaves, etc). The 7D has available for it some fine lenses to do wide with as well. But, I'd just have to take a look at landscape images from both to be sure. Larger sensors tend to provide that certain "pop" that small sensors haven't been able to achieve. Since you are planning on doing a "whole host of other things," the 7D would probably be more suitable, because it has more reach and crop-able pixel density. If you spend a lot of time doing low-light high-ISO shooting, the D700 may have the edge there. One huge advantage of the 7D is that it can take the extraordinary EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens.
