Currently I believe Fred has set for any thread to be locked after a year from date of creation. We all know that a new response will bump a thread back to the top again. Personally, I am annoyed at several "old" threads that have been bumped back to the top by the OP every now and then. I am sure I am not the only one who feel this way. I might be the minority but what the heck...

So my poll is "How long should a thread last or be remained active?"

Clarification: "Other" means longer than 2 months.

Good idea for a thread on threads, Thang. 1st vote cast.

Thang,
2 weeks is plenty, and no you are not in the minority on this.

Thanks for putting this up here as I was wondering the same thing myself, Being a "newbie" I didn't know if there was an unspoken "rule" about how long a thread should be continued, but at the same time didn't want to be rude by not taking the time to respond when someone was kind enough to take the time to make suggestions on my images... will be nice to get a feel for what everybody thinks

Not everybody will chime in on something like this...especially the ones that happen to do it or someone that doesn't post here much and just lurks.

I wouldn't worry too much about what "others" think...do what you feel is the right thing.

I do agree that if someone took the time to comment or critique in your topic and you happen to forget about it (things sometimes move fast around here) that it's common courtesy to thank them for their efforts (I'm guilty of this myself). Things happen and sometimes people can't respond in a timely manner.

I personally don't have a problem with an older topic being brought back up to the top of the page...there's a back button on my keyboard for things I've already read or commented on and it's not the end of the world.

Other: I don't care about 2-year-old threads being bumped to the top.

As long people feel the need to react on it.

If you, others and I are "done" with a thread, than we're done with the thread and it will fade away by itself.

I will skip to the next thread.
It make sense to let threads expire after a year but for other reasons than frequently listed on the first page.

You mean my "I'm On NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS!!!!" thread? Sorry about that, my humblest apologies! I shall never do it again, I now understand I've been self-absorbed and tooting my own horns way too many times. Many on this forum are way better photographers than me, I just happen to enter my photos on every contest I see and when I win, I expected everyone to bow and praise me...now I see my selfish mistakes. Thanks for showing me the light. Peace.

I don't know who you are, or how you did this BUT I'll buy ya a beer if you're ever down this way! Ed

What about Jim Wilson's Mustang Air to Air. That thread (I know. It's now the second thread) is over six hundred pages. I would hate to see that shut down.

Yes, you're correct. There are also threads about "Canon in actions", "show your best Nikon shots", "show your best canon shots", "freebie..." in the Buy/Sell forum...But IMHO, those threads are distinctly different/special from those I have seen on NW though.

It sure is a shame to be forced to address this issue for just one person's constant abuse of the system but it is what it is.

As long as appropriate. I'm thinking of the Freebie/Nada thread on B&S - there's something really special about that thread. Or maybe B&S doesn't count for the poll. Not sure.

Yes, and I see a couple of the regulars are both in the process of flood posting and it will be off the front page in the next 30 minutes

Oh no no no... its not from me. I'm just saying that a moderator will be closely looking at this thread. I didn't mean to give rise to any heads-up Thang. Sorry if it sounded like that.

When I first starting posting I thought the " quote the other person and respond with a comment of your own" thing that most of us are guilty of, was a bit ridiculous. However, I was a newbie at that time (over 4 years ago), so I just conformed with what I thought was the "norm".

I still don't mind if this same system is employed. As I see it, if an image or set of images keeps getting pushed to the front for the next year, than someone took a great freakin' picture! (i,e , those smokin' ass set of osprey images and / or thunderbird's outstanding accomplishment)

However, what I don't appreciate is when someone "bumps" their own thread back to the front page, because no one commented while it was on page one . In fairness, this happens very rarely.

Believe me I've had several posts that got pushed to page 2 or 3 with no comments and sat around wondering why no one took the time to comment. I , like most I'm sure, only try to post images that will evoke a response. This is how we learn, how we get better, and quite frankly, it's good for my ego

But I had to sit and watch those posts die because I refused to bring them back to the front on my own. If they didn't warrant a comment the first time around, then I must need to try harder. So I do.

I never know whether to keep thanking folks, pushing the thread back up, or wait until the frequency dies down and avoid getting in the last "thanks"

But yours is not THE OFFICIAL Holy Grail. Besides that, you used top-of-the-line equipment.

Sorry, but unless you can Zoom-bump your thread to the top every day, yours will just remain a second-rate Holy Grail.

Regardless, you have my blessing Just don't let it go to your head.

2 months is plenty, lest we have the Thunderboid flying forever.
