I had returned my 7D to Canon Service to fix an inconsistency in the AF system. I received it back last night and this morning found some ducks (not easy in Las Vegas.) These are all shot with the EF 70-200mm f4L I used both spot and center point focus, single shot, evaulative metering. Processed with ACR 5.5 and tweaked in CS4. All shot in RAW. All are cropped to some degree.

I am not posting these for C&C but to show that those owners who complained about problems with the AF system on the 7D were not imagining things or incompetent. I could not get close to this IQ with the intial settings in my 7D.

AF certainly seems to be working now...

Well I guess I dont buy one from the US, way too much adjusting and returning with the 7D:/

+ 1 I had my 7D for only a week with AF issues and I didn't want to send it to Canon for repair and so my retailer replaced it. Night and day improvement - the new one focuses like the dickens. With the first one I'd check the AF point against the image on the computer and it would often be way OOF. The new one focuses extremely well.

Whatever they "adjusted" sure was the answer to my AF problems.

One thing I noticed after reading about these 7D "issues" is some people had a lot of luck with better AF after doing a hard reset of the camera, they were saying that it was like a whole different camera. Something some of you might want to try.

I tried that before I sent it off to Canon... no change noted. I just think there were a certain batch of bodies that got on the wrong final inspection stand and were not calibrated correctly before going into the box.

Congrats on getting your camera back John, and in proper working order. I hope you enjoy your 7D as much as I'm enjoying mine.

You might want to check the inside of your 7D again - it looks like they added a duck filter!

Do you have any before photos you can post? Your photos of the ducks are simply amazing. I am one of the unlucky ones that are having trouble with my 7d focusing. I have it packed and ready to go back to amazon.

Did canon pay for the shipping or did that come out of your pocket? Just wandering before I make the final decision on what I want to do.

I really don't have any of the "bad" ones... i would download them, check the IQ and then delete the entire batch. I did have some excellent ones which is what really disturbed me. See this URL on Smugmug for the ones I kept... the repaired body images start with the duck shots on the last page.

You pay the shipping to Canon and they pay the return which is usually overnight or two day. I only sent the body... no battery, card or lenses. If not successful on the first try then they will pay both ways to do a second return. They will notify you of receipt and acceptance but their status leaves a lot to be desired as I indicated above.... usually a quick one week or so turn around.

I am going to take the MB in for a mid-term oil change (I have a $1500 gift card from MBCA) and I will mention the orange peel around the license plate area. See if they say "that's normal"...

Did you include a CD with sample images or just a description of the problem. Care to share what you wrote? Also which Canon facility did you send it to?

I went to the web site Support Page and just wrote that I was having inconsistent AF performance. They accepted that and I filled out the form and it generated a Repair # and form to fill out. Print out the form and include it in the box. I used the Irvine center in California. I did not send the battery, card or anything else with the body.

They really turn it around quickly.

I'll bet money they say its normal....cause the factory said its "OK".

Want it gone....got to wet sand it down...polish back to shine. We did every show car that way at the plant. This is what tells you, its should look better, but they wont make it that way.
