To me, the background competes with the owl - not sure if it is a result of the 'style' or not.

This was a difficult shot pushing the limits of a hand-held long lens with modest lighting. End result was a relatively soft image and I decided to try to add an artistic filter in Photoshop to see if I could make the image work better and not necessarily sharper. The "style" ended up lightening the owl. Competition with the background does seem to be an additional problem beyond the softness.
