We recently lost one of the 20th century's greatest photographers. I was lucky enough to meet Roy DeCarava in the 1980s when I went to school with his daughter. He was every bit as kind and gracious a person as you might imagine. He even gave me a tour of his darkroom--it seemed enormous to me at the time--where he spent a lifetime refining the printing techniques that set his work apart.

I planned to post a few of my favorite images of his, but I can't bring myself to select them. If you're curious about his work, I encourage you to look him up. This is a good place to start.

Great stuff and a loss for sure. Makes me feel like I don't know a single thing about photography seeing his work. I'm technically good...but really, that is not what the end game is with photography, not even close...he got to the end zone. He really got the emotion...you "feel" when you see shots, that is what great photography is all about. He was there and so are you through him.

Must have been wonderful to meet him.
