Wondering if anyone has had this problem and what the solution was...I do hear the vr clicking but no autofocus...

I attached another zoom lens and a fixed focal lens to my D700 and they both work fine...

It's still under warranty so I guess I can send it back to dealer/nikon if necessary...

thanks for any advice on how to solve this...I've have this lens since January and it has worked flawlessly, until today...

Did you check to see if the switch on the lens is mid way between the A and M settings? Also a dirty contact point on the lens (seeing as though it doesn't affect your other lenses). Good luck.

Alright...I'll clean the contacts with something, they look fine but you never know...I've already played a bit with the a/m settings switch and the vr switch as well...

it's all kinda weird cause it worked fine the last time I used it...maybe two months ago...didn't drop it or anything since...I mean it's been in a bag safe and sound...it just stopped working...

Cleaning the contacts with rubbing alcohol always fixes mine when this occurs. it usually happens when I either don't use any af-s lenses for a while and the contacts on the camera get dirty or haven't used a particular lens in a while and the lens contacts get dirty.

You stated that you tried a prime and it focused, was this prime an af-d? If so it doesn't use the extra contacts an af-s lens does.

Yes, it is af-d...thanks, I didn't see that...

I just wiped down the lens contacts with rubbing alcohol...nothin' :-(

But I will try again before calling the dealer I bought it from...
