One thing that keeps me coming back to the Alt forum is that the regulars here obviously are rather intelligent.

I find myself arguing with people on other forums about fundamental optical, ergonomical, electronic and software issues that are so plain and obvious yet they consistently disagree with baseless arguments. It's quite exhausting.

The kind of person who seeks a way outside of the norm to improve the imaging quality, ergonomics or enjoyment of their photography must be rather intelligent and rational.

I've certainly had my run-ins when difference of personal aesthetic opinion arises (hi Richard) but the user-base of this sub-forum seem very informed and no one has to repeatedly cover basic optical theory to make a point.

If this comes across as a bit of a rant thread about other forums, that's because it is.

I agree. The points you make are the main reason I prefer hanging out here rather than other forums. Another thing I really appreciate here is that, not only do we have intelligent, well informed members but those members are geographically diverse and often bring a richness and texture to discussions based on different backgrounds, both professional and cultural, absent in other forums.

+1 ... from not-so-young 'grasshopper'

Everyone here does a good job of 'stretching' each other to grow ... in an eclectic sort of way. I just wish my attempts for contribution were as SOLID as so many of you. But alas, the rust of many idle years render me more as a perpetual apprentice rather than the master craftsman I'd like to think I once was (somewhat delusional) .

THANKS TO ALL !!!

This is ASCII for +1

Dan, it's always a pleasure to discuss with you, regardless of whether we agree or not In fact, disagreement is healthy.

Sounds like you are 'plenty nerdy' enough.

I hang around here for an opposite consequence of the same reason. This is the place I can (and try to) learn most from. I even had to buy all those exotic lenses to just punch my entry ticket Thanks all of you for humoring my bumbling efforts.

The thing that makes this forum work is that those who post always have real world examples to back it up.

Daniel, I hope I am not included in your rant, due to my CA/blooming comment. At the time that I wrote that, I couldn't remember how to tell them apart, and didn't think it was important enough to look up, in the context of a lens owner who didn't care what it was, just that it was present. The discussion went really off-tangent there for a bit... I also enjoy the discussions we have here (although I have been fairly absent for a while).

Yeah, that's how i'd put it too. That, and alt glass users are more interested in producing a shot through a different (dare i say it... "alternative") kind of technical creativity.

Results matter.

A Real Estate photographer took photos of my mom's place a few weeks ago and I briefly chatted with him about photography. He asked me if I was in any Groups or Clubs - stating that they are great ways to learn new things. I realized then, I didn't need to join any groups or clubs because the wealth of info and learning I get from you guys... far better than any info I might get from joining a club.

Sadly now... my alt glass gets more use than my good Canon lenses.

No Carsten you're a good one

Hey did you paint your red dot black or did you buy a black dot? I asked the Leica disty here and he's requested black dots from Leica but he says he isn't hopeful. DAG is sold out of em.

You know you're just asking for a "play on words" response there, especially around such an intelligent crowd.

I'll forgo the antics and simply state that Canon has made some great lenses. That's simply undeniable. Anyone who says differently is in danger of rhyming with that 25 cent word you used above

Oh, Dan, I agree with your original post. The intelligence here is second only to the talent, IMO. Keeps me coming back.

The Canon and Nikon forums draw a greater cross-section of the photographic world. The majority tend not to buy manual focus lenses, RF'ers, or alternative gear. Those that do are most likely to have more photographic knowledge and many participate regularly on this forum.

I'm finding this forum very helpful in making M mount buying decisions. The side benefit has been the knowledge gained from the non-Leica posts.
