Every time I've tried it it hasn't worked.

Is it connected to auto WB in some way?

I have used it with good results. Works well for some action, and replaces "focus and recompose" on my D300.

3D tracking uses the same RGB sensor as is used to determine WB, but AF and WB have no effect (that I'm aware of) on each other.

In good light, with a clear point of focus. A coloured shirt, a hat, something. Has worked when I knew it could handle it.

I was snapping a series and all of a sudden the images turned blue?? The background was green.


Then this for a few frames



It seems like Russian roulette, with the view finder focus popping all over the place

weird. Although to be honest, I can't see why you'd use 3d tracking in this situatiuon. With something running towards you, with you panning, then sure, but this?

Well I never use it. I tried it for this shoot . I won't do that again.

I didn't use a flash. That's why I asked if 3d focusing was connected to auto WB

I tried a couple times on motorcycles coming from the side and toward me, which is what someone told me it was good for.
Very bad results on focus. Switched back to single point and it was spot on again.

Use it all the time for fast tracking.

it never worked well for stills - it is moving object thing. used it at airshow and few F1 races - outstanding result.

bottom line you need this when you move and your sudjects moves as well

Me too. Figured the kids were slower.

I used it in cloudy weather with strong winds, egrets and herons were flying past on wind currents very fast and the 3D focusing nailed them more times than I remember. The birds were doing figure wights around the Dam here.

The D3 system would probably be even quicker so HURRAH!

This looks like a white balance problem. The camera looked for something white and failed, so turned some color white. If this was under artificial light, it could be a part of the light cycle.

I wish i had a d300 for that reason, my D80 seems to love to focus on the water that pops up during ducks taking off and not the duck,(of course this is totally my fault since there is no tracking on an 80)

Probably. Have you converted the two NEFs using fixed color temperature settings and compared them?

Also when posting pics that you think something was off with leave the exif or metadata intact so we can see what the settings were.

Auto-area AF mode
This new mode measures all 11 focus areas, automatically determines which of them are on the primary subject, and activates only those areas. During AF measurement, all focus areas that lie within the range of proper focus blink for easier confirmation.

So, multiple objects within the focus areas will cause problems with the camera, high performance tho it is, not quite the performance of the D300.

And this from page 29 of the user manual:
Autofocus Mode Controls used: button
The following autofocus modes are available when the focus mode selector is set to AF:
Autofocus mode Description
AF-A Auto select
(default setting)
Camera automatically selects single-servo autofocus when subject is stationary,
continuous-servo autofocus when subject is moving. Shutter can
only be released if camera is able to focus.
AF-S Single-servo AF
For stationary subjects. Focus locks when shutter-release button is pressed
halfway. Shutter can only be released when in-focus indicator is displayed.

I dont know enough to explain the technical differences, but I think nothing is wrong and your specific requirements are beyond what the camera can deliver.

If your responding to my post, I was being silly but yes. I know the differences in the different focus modes and use them accordingly. I was saying I could use a more advanced af system of the newer/higher end camera not that there was something wrong with mine.

I haven't had good luck with it either, I switched to 9 point and 21 point and have had better luck with polo, horse racing and hockey.

It's too slow at present. I am sure it will be a great feature once the processing power and speed of the cameras allow it.

For now, just forget it.

Sorry, I missed the point earlier. I need a D3, s or x as well.

i used it with all 51 point and everything was fine - not sure why but it worked well.

Have not tried it yet on D700 - nothing in the area with tracking requirements .... maybe just goose

i play around with 3D tracking but find myself going back to 21 every time

I use it for surf photography. Works great.

I've tried it with H/S football at night. Problem is, there are just too many players moving in most shots. At least someone will be in focus.
