Just for kicks while trying to get a close up of the goalie's helmet I threw a TC1.7 on a rented 400 AFS-II f/2.8. The metadata says it is 950mm while it should only be 710mm. Is the metadata wrong or is the 1.7 for some reason extra powerful at magnification when combined with the 400mm AFS-II f/2.8. I'm not sure if it was actually at 950 or 710 as both are soo zoomed in that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, whatever it was it was incredibly difficult to get a sharp shot with. |

For NX 2, at least, the metadata reads it with the TC factored in. So, you can get a focal length for a lens that technically does not reach a certain length on its own. |

That is perfectly normal. Wrong, but normal. |

That would read 1000mm. 400 X 1.6667(actual 1.7#) X 1.5 = 1000mm |

The exact same thing happens on my D700 with my 1.7 & 300mm 2.8. It shows 700mm as the focal length. I am not shooting in crop mode. If there is a reason for this I would be interested in hearing it. |

Ah, I was getting that it was perfectly normal for a DX camera not FX... Sorry my misunderstanding. |

I have posted something similar to this problem. I have not been able to find a logical explanation either. |
