If the new camera is $3299 as KR predicts, I think I will get one and stop looking at the Sony stuff.

Anyone else starting to get a big case of NAS?

It is justified in this case.....

Nikon Rumors states that there is most likely not going to be an updated D700 any time soon... so, don't hold your breath. There aren't any real strong legitimate sources stating that there might be a release.

Right now, I'd be happy with a D700. If a D700s or D800 came out... cool. It makes the D700 drop in price

Personally, I think what's going to happen is sometime next year you'll see a D700s with the D3s sensor. Once the D4 comes out, the D800 will follow with the D4 sensor.

Everyone assumes that they are going to slap the D3x sensor into a D700 type body, but I don't know if that's going to happen any time soon - or at all. I just don't see how they can price it in a way that it would work. Too high, no one buys it and it can't compete at all with the 5dII, too low, you kill off your D3x sales.

Having a D3x now, I'd love a smaller camera with the same sensor - that'd be fantastic, but I just don't see it happening.

I would like to see D700x with D3X sensor....But I am sure Nikon won't do that which may dent D3 series sales......So I will wait for an year to see next FF camera on D700 body...

Even if they come out with a D700x with a D3x sensor, it will just have far more noise and cost $5000 instead of $8000.

I'd be sad if they D700 didn't get the D3s treatment with video and better high ISO without upping the megapixels. That'd be the ideal wedding body for me.

All I want, need and look forward to is an upgrade to my brain.
Sadly, I think it may not be coming.

Pavel, if that's your picture you're a young man but I'm not. You see the way this "Life Thing" works is, as your body/brain ages, you compensate with smarter/newer/better equipment.

i think the bigger impact would be a d700s over a d700x, but thats just me.

I'd love a D700s with what I've seen from the earlier D3s images.

+1

I'm very content with my current bodies, more so than at any point in the 30+ years I've been using these things. I wish they'd quit screwing around with the BS consumer gimmicks and/or hire some more freaking lens engineers and put out some more good lens updates that will work well on the antiquated bodies that I have, let alone the fancy and more demanding bodies that will be out when I'm ready for a new camera.......

My disappointment is that at the moment I would need two bodies: 1 DX and 1 FX. If they bought out a D3x sensor in a D700 body, then I could make do with 1 body, and use the DX crop mode when needed.

I've really avoided the buy new camera every time they come out merry go round. Problem is a lot of money gets blown on something so relatively unimportant. I've been putting my money into first class lenses and updating my computer & software. Heck, I've spent more on my lighting system this year than what a new D700 would cost. LIghts, lenses, tripods are critical and seem to hold their value much better. I predict the D700 will drop to about $1,500 later this winter (it's hitting below $2,000 now on eBay.) When that happens, I'll look at one again. And 14-24mm f2.8 & 24-70mm f2.8. Makes no sense to me at all to buy a camera and not have the lenses to support it. The D300 is doing all I ask at the moment.

Super true! Changing to an FX system from DX can represent a substantial amount of $.

A used D700 is super tempting, but for my purposes the dual card slots of the D300s seems really smart and makes me hesitate on the D700. Meh

Great points!
However, I would not deny purchase of a new camera that can deliver much better detail and quality with existing lenses, even if the lenses included such 'non pro' lenses as the 70-300vr.

For many, taking pics entails the best lenses money can buy, for others, they can do with what they have or even with 'consumer grade' lenses. Also, making pics does not require quad processing power and every bit of software available, tho they are to be desired.

So, there are sliding priorities based on preferences, need, or other factors.

There is no way that I'd upgrade from a D700 to a D700s for a slightly tweaked sensor and a movie mode. The D3 and D3s share the same sensor except for a slightly tweaked microlens structure, from what I understand. It certainly isn't a reengineered chunk of silicone. As for movie mode, it might be fun but is not the reason I purchased a D700.

If they release a D700 with a 25 mp sensor at a price under $4000 or so, I'll buy it, dumping my backup D300. The thing is, if Nikon adds $3000 to the price of a D700 like they did to the D3 to get the D3x, I won't be able to afford it. On the other hand, if they make it more reasonable, how do they justify the $3000 for the D3x over a D3. I love Nikons but their marketing stinks sometimes.

As for dual cards, really now, who cares? As for the ISO of the D3s, again, who'd use it? I know with my D700, I don't stop up past 6400 and rarely go even there. I want to take nice photos. I don't care to take noisy messes just to say I did it at some crazy ISO. I mean, isn't that why we love photography? We want to take the best photographs that our skill allows. These tools we use are supposed to make it easier. Sticking a couple of silly extra features and putting an "S" by the name certainly does not compel me to think they will contribute to me taking better images.

Professionals who get paid for their images, on both accounts. I've been bitten by a faulty CF card and never again wish to endure that. Wedding photographers, photojournalist, event shooters, and street shooters the world over can use more ISO and redundancy. It's not a matter of if your media fails, but when.
