Hi folks- I am extremely new to photography and this board. I recently purchased the Canon 7D and am running into issues with Pocketwizard plus II, MiniTT1 and FlexTT5. The issue is that in some apertures ( above f/5 in most lenses) and certain focal lengths ( this one varies and I could not narrow it down but it only happens with L series lenses as far as I can tell!), the camera does not trigger any of these PW devices. I have even changed the mode in TT1 and TT5 to “ trigger only” so they act as a trigger without any data from the camera/ lens and still am running into the same issue.

I am using this set up with studio lighting. I also downloaded the latest firmware last night and still have the same issue.

Has anyone else experienced this with 7d? Pocketwizard is telling me that they are in the process of developing a new firmware for 7d and I understand that there might be a firmware issue with these devices in the TTL mode but why do they not work in the simple trigger mode consistently (or why does the PW plus II does not work in all focal lengths and aperture) ?

I do not have any of these issues with external flash- 580 EXII. PW devices work flawlessly with my 5D MKII.

Hope this post makes sense!

For full 7D support you should download and install the beta firmware here

http://www.pocketwizard.com/support/downloads/beta

Doesn't explain why the PlusII wouldn't work though . . .

Do you have a 2nd camera to test with? I ask because it's strange that focal length would have anything to do with the issues you're having; especially when it comes to the older Wizards.

thanks. Let me clarify my comment about the focal length and aperture; that comment only applies to TT1 and TT5 when thy are in full TTL mode.

And yes, we tried two other 7D's and they behaved exactly the same. I will do the beta upgrade and see if it solves the issue in conjunction with the new 7d firmware (1.09) tonight.

Thanks!

well then it's definitely the firmware thing . . .

"Compatibility with the Canon EOS 7D With this firmware installed, the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 can be used with the 7D. There are no known compatibility issues with v4.364 and Canon's latest digital SLR, says LPA Design's Jim Clark"

update: everything works great with the install of the new PW beta firmware. Also, the issue with the PW plus II was the TT5 as I was using the plus II as a transmitter and the TT5 as a receiver. The TT5 must be in the "trigger mode" to see the plus II. In my case, it kept reverting back to the default( TTL) mode. This issue was also fixed with the software update.

Thank you K_Strecker!

There is now also an official (non-beta) firmware update adding 7D compatibility. Works great. I get perfect HyperSync at 1/400th.
