I've never had a problem with sticky filters.......until now. I recently bought a Hoya HD CPL filter which sticks on every lens it's put on. It goes on easily, but it's very difficult to get off. Is there anything that can be put on the filter threads that will make it easier to remove? Thanks.

FWIW, I seem to have found a technique that works. The filter doesn't bind until completely screwed on the lens. Since I like to turn the outer ring clockwise to avoid loosening the filter and risk losing the filter (don't laugh, it happened to me), the filter gets screwed completely onto the lens and therefore binds. But, there is a little play between the threaded ring and the outer ring. If I move the outer ring a bit it seems to allow the threaded ring to move. I've tried this repeatedly and it has worked every time so far. Don't ask me how or why it works, but it does. If this is a reliable work around, it will be better than applying anything to the threads.

Try some candle wax on the threads.

+1 (...DON'T use any lubricating liquids like WD-40, etc!)

Try not to screw the filter to the very end of its rotation. When removing it, use as light a touch as possible. I don't use Hoya, but I used to have problems with stuck filters all the time. Now I never do.

You should also get a set of filter wrenches and and carry them with you in your bag. Very low cost, and they work well for when things do get stuck.

I do plan to order a couple filter wrenches the next time I place an order for some other stuff. But, for now, I'll carry a couple rubber bands with me.

Samething has happened to me with my Hoya CP. Twice the filter fell apart and got lube all over the freakin place Once the front portion feel to the concrete ground. Lucky for me it didn't break. Both times I was able to put it back together.

EDIT: I've had the filter stuck many times but only fell apart twice.

Which Hoya CP filter was it? I've used the Hoya Pro1 filters for years with no problem. The one I have a problem with is a HD filter. In fact, it's the second one. Both would stick when fully screwed on.

Can't remember which filter I have, will check tonight. All I remember is that it cost me 70+ bucks at Adorama.

Gary,

The box just says "Hoya Filter-Filtre Cir-Polarizing". I believe it's this filter...

http://www.thkphoto.com/ I would contact Hoya and explain the problems you are having with the filter. If it's still under warranty, return it to them.

The filter is at least 2 years old but I may contact them anyway. Thanks runamuck!

If it's stuck, you can tap the filter lightly (!) with a piece of wood or such, sometimes a pen will do.
It's usually just a little wedged.

I had one of their cheaper green boxed (made in Phillipines) Polarizer fall apart once. The retaing ring that holds the front element in, kept working it's way out. The ring itself was not entirely round. Just bad quality. I've used their higher end filters with no problems.

It's not smooth anymore. I used it yesterday and it's a bit gritty. It works though and it didn't stick or come apart

my Hoya Pro1 CP gets stuck to my 77-72mm step down ring all the friggin time!

especially if its been out in the cold and the metal has contracted since they're different materials they contract and expand at different rates in colder temps so I usually have to "defrost" them before I can finally get them apart.

the B+W bronze ringed filters don't get stuck together as easily as the aluminum or other metal ring filters.
