Hi Guys,

What are peoples experiences with Mackcam extended warranties (actually making a claim and getting a repair done / reimbursement).

Cheers,

Dave

I've heard nothing but good things. They're like an NPC who gives you free goods when you need 'em!

Ok, well i'm not sure how to proceed. Story:

My 40D main PCB died on me...I went got a quote, got it approved by Mack, then paid for it myself and sent evidence of payment to Mack on the 10th of September.

They are still delaying and saying that the cheque has not yet been printed more than a month after I gave them proof of payment.

What is really getting on my nerves however is that they approved a rate of XXX Australian dollars at that time and converted it to US dollars. As you guys might be aware the Aussie dollar has really gained over the last couple of months against the US, which means if they print the cheque now at what they originally stated in US dollars it will be worth much less AU dollars than I paid for the repair. I feel this would be very unfair that I would be financially penalised for slow processing on Mack's part.

What do you guys think? I emailed them with this concern two business days ago and have received no reply whereas with other enquiries they have always replied within 24 hours.

Thanks,

Dave

I would keep with it and and put in the subject line that you are requesting a reply. I would make my request very simple, clear and to the point.

Thanks for the suggestion...in my previous email I was fairly civil and did say I looked forward to a prompt resolution (or at least reply) on the matter.

Will let you know how it turns out anyway.

My cousin had his 20D and 30D shutter replaced by them. Bioth times it cost him like $15 shipping. He said they sent them out to Canon to be replaced, then shipped them back to him. He has been very happy with them.

I have a question, I want to buy the 7D from bestbuy, but if I do, can I buy a Mack warranty from someone like Adorama, and apply it to the BB bought camera? Or do they both have to be purchased together, from the same place?

Hi Mate,

Yes, you can buy the warranty from a different vendor than the camera (even ebay). All you need to do is make sure you register it within 30 days of the camera purchase.

Dave

Ian,

Thankyou for the extra Mack' contact. I will try and contact Desiree if I'm not getting a satisfactory response elsewhere.

Well I never got a reply to my email concerning the amount of the reimbursement and date of conversion from AUD to USD.

So I emailed my concern to Desiree and Scott at mackcam, who must have forwarded my email to another employee Laura, who simply forwarded me a previous email from the original representitive that didn't answer the question which was the whole point of the email.

Apparently my check is getting printed on friday, but they have not addressed my questions as to the amount that it is being made out to.

This is going around in circles

I had a 3-yr extended warranty on my 20D and 100-400L. Just before the expiration of the warranty, my 20D (now a backup to my 1D3) had its shutter die at 80K clicks. Mack handled the repair and the camera seems to be fine. On the 100-400L the focus ring siezed up (not sure why, maybe a ball bearing disintegrated?); Mack had it for six weeks, when I prompted them what was happening I got a message that they were sending it off to Canon to do the work. After a total absence of nearly three months I have a very nicely functioning 100-400 again. All it cost me was shipping.

Thanks Helen,

If I don't receive a direct repsonse this time I will forward the email thread to you for your perusal to see if anything is amiss from usual process.

ejmartin: Being a local customer you have not experienced the financial problem of changing exchange rate during the long process of getting reimbursement.

What is most unfortunate is that there may be nothing amiss, I just haven't got a direct answer from Mackcam regarding this even after a number of emails attempting to.

Cheers,

Dave

Well yesterday I replied back to Laura stressing that I want this two month wait vs change of exchange rate problem resolved before the check is printed on Friday. I cc'd this to Desiree and Scott also.

So I got to work today and read my email. I have an email from Laura and one form Desiree.

Laura states that:

David,

The check will be in USD for $623.08. It is based on when the approval was provided to you.

Laura

Desiree states:

Dear Mr. W,
I have been informed that your check has been approved and printed. It will be mailed to you tomorrow.

So, I've been trying to get a straight answer out of these people about what amount the check is being made out two for a week. My question gets ignored. I then get told the check will be printed friday. So I ask that they reply to my concern and resolve it before then. Now I am being told that the check got printed on Wednesday...how convenient that they print it quickly so that they don't have to negotiate its value (after a two month wait to get it printed).

So at the end of the day I have been inconvenienced for much longer than I expected to trying to get my reimbursement check sent. During this time though the exchange rate has changed and I have also been penalised financially - not a great amount...but after the level of service I have received it is enough to annoy me.

4th of September when they approved my quote:

28th of October when they printed my cheque:

So I've lost 70 dollars due to the exchange rate changing while mackcam was delaying in printing my check.

If they were an ethical business they would do the currency conversion on the date they print the check. I also cant understand why it takes this long to get printed.

Extended warranties are generally waaaaay bad for the consumers. Profit margins on them are fantastic, and that's why they try to sell you one on just about everything you buy these days.

If you don't trust a product enough to rely on the mfg's warranty and the quality of the merchandise, don't buy the darned thing.

Or, use a credit card that provides warranty extensions (free) when you buy camera gear.

It has still made an 800 dollar repair only cost 150 dollars or so...so an extended warranty generally is well worth it overall.

My reasoning was that there would be two sorts of failure modes -- either there would be initial quality problems, in which case the product would be covered by Canon's warranty; or there would be a long-time failure after much use, well beyond the coverage period of credit card warrenties etc. For instance I wasn't expecting my shutter to fail within a couple of years, indeed it lasted well past the nominal life of 50K clicks, but nonetheless it failed before the warranty expired; similarly for the lens. So I definitely got my money's worth out of the two warranties.

I've since upgraded to more expensive gear that I wouldn't trust a 3rd party to service, and also the build quality is better, so I passed on Mack warranties on those items.

The good thing about Mack warranties in Australia is that the local authorsied repairer IS Canon. So that side of it is good. What isn't so good is getting the reimbursement in a timely manner and well...read the rest of this thread...

G'day Dave,

I am also still waiting for reimbursement after a claim that was approved back on the 15th of September. They should pay in Aussie dollars not US dollars. I am wondering if they will even send the cheque in Aussie dollars because if it is in US dollars my bank is just as likely to hit us with a conversion fee which means I loose even more. I'm not real impressed with this side of things.

Jeff
