So has anyone figured out a cover for the Elinchrom Quadra heads? I remember seeing what looked like a tupperware lid but I haven't been able to find the exact size.

if you have the RQ - EL adapter already could you buy the Eli protection cap that comes with the 1100ws ranger? this uses the Eli EL mount to attach.

I was kind of wondering about this myself. It seems like something designed for travelling and location photoshoots would need a protective cover more than a light that's designed to be used in the studio.

jdear that would work but it would definitely take away from the portability of the unit. I'm happy with the Quadra so far but the lack of a cover and sturdiness of stand mount is disappointing.

If you have a Costco near you they have a $20 glass bowl set that has covers that fit both the head with reflector and the full size adapter.

I keep the 18cm reflector with a grid on for transport & storage.
But I do wonder how much engineering effort it can be to fabricate a small cap with RQ mount.....

This thread on POTN will help with a mount mod that supposedly is more robust than the standard one.

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=662279&highlight=mount&page=20

The Quadra adapter mount appears identical to the notorious one used on the DLites - in short designed only for small modifiers. I can't attest as to how well the mod works with the Quadra adapter, but did a similar one to a Dlite I owned and it worked well. It worked so well, my Mola Demi cracked the Dlite housing vs creep-down the swivel adapter. Classic example of the fixing of one weak point causing another to rear it's head.

Am looking at moving to either Quadra vs AcuteB myself vs my Elichrom DLite and BXRi gear. The various pros & cos aside of either system aside, a couple of things that make me hesitate on the Quadra are the silly things Eli decided to do - weak swivel mount that needs a DIY solution, the lack of covers for a compact field system (WTF?) and the utter unavailability of the Elinchrom mount adapter.

There is a similar thread on POTN re: DIY covers for the Quadra heads.

I keep a 7" reflector with a grid in it on the head when I store it

I've got two 'cover' systems for my quadras. The most robust is, as was suggested, popping a $13 ranger head cover on the RQ-EL adapter. That's close to bomb proof. My second system uses a modified padded mess-kit bag from Eastern Mountain Soprts. It's contoured and fits the quadra+RQ reflector perfectly.

I'd still love to see a Quadra cap similar to the Ranger one.

I came up with a very improvised but also a very quick and easy Quadra headcover.
Made with stuff most people will have laying around.
I glued two CD's together with two strips of fabric in between. The fabric has Velcro on one side
( I actually used the fasteners that came with the PLM's)
I already had velcro on the Quadra reflector,I use that to attach gels.

I took a few quick and dirty shots with a P&S to give you an idea.
This took about ten minutes start to finish.
Hope this helps, until Elinchrom comes with a proper cover.

Erik

At PhotoPlus Expo last month in New York City, I asked Bogen's Elinchrom product manager specifically about this and he told me that a cap for the Quadra ranger head is on it's way.
