I like the original best, also. I like the wider configuration and the inclusion of the crate in the corner with the lettering on it. Nice choice of tone. SC apple producers association?

With the uniformity, I'm attracted to the "wider is better" theory. With the repeating pattern, it bears showing off.

I'm for the edit Scott. The crack pulls in my eye a bit more here. Obviously, my interpretation isn't what you envisioned. Both have their merits.
