I've been having nothing but problems using my new MiniTT1/FlexTT5 setup. I realize there is a noise issue with some Canon Speedlights, but my problem seems different. I can't shoot past 5-7 feet if there is an obstruction between the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5. However, when I notice it's not setting the flash off when I take the picture, I try hitting the TEST button on the MiniTT1 and it fires the flash. What the heck could be the problem?

It must have taken me 10 tries to get my 580EXII on a FlexTT5 to fire and capture this shot Friday night. That's totally unacceptable to me.

Did you try using an off camera cord? get an OC-E3 and some Ferrite chokes from radioshack(one on each end of the cord). put a little distance between the units and you will double your range. I bought the non-canon 10ft version on e-bay and so far so good. the brand was yongnuo.

My point is, why is my flash firing when I hit the TEST button on the Mini TT1, but not always firing when I press my shutter on the 5DMKII?

Sounds like the Mini TT1 has a connection problem with the camera. I have had problems like that with the Elinchrom Skyport system.

It simply does not have a good contact to the camera. If this is the case you should of course report this and get a new one.

Wow why didn't I think of that. I'll call PW.

5DMKII Owner Update:

Are any other 5DMKII owners having issues with their Pocketwizard TT1s? I sent in my original TT1 and pocketwizard gave me a brand new set of TT1 and TT5s, and I'm STILL having the exact same issue, but now with my Alien Bee 800s. The test button on the TT1 fires the flash, my sekonic flash meter with the PW modules fires the flash, but my damn 5DMKII will not fire the flash everytime. Do I need to send in my 5D next? That seems like BS to me.

If you mount a Speedlite on the camera instead of the MiniTT1, will it fire every time? That would rule out a camera problem.

Did you update to their latest firmware v5.0? That version has a specific fix for the Canon EOS 5D MkII.

I use the miniTT1 and FlexTT5 with my "noisy" 430EX, works correctly if I have the AC5 shield on the 430EX.

Bigbear.

Working flawlessly (even before the new FW update).
5Dmk2 TT5's all around with Canon 430EX2 units (No AC5 shields), FW ver 5.0.

Maybe consider the larger TT5 on the body like I use. It has a better antenna and your hand may be acting as one when you push the button.

Good luck!

yeah I think that's going to be my solution, I think the TT1 just can't do it. There's no way its my cameras hotshoe as I have zero problems with on camera flash.

TeeJay,

have you set up the flash menu for the 5DII? If I have my mini on basic flash with my 5D, I have issues but if I set the menu to 5D to trigger, no worries. Just need to fire of a shot first.

I set C1 to basic and C2 to 5D. I also use the mini for my 40D and it has no problems at all using the basic mode.

There seems to be a voodo eith anytthing that has a 5D in it with the mini ......

Straight out of the box, the mini/flax system is crapola.
Never had any issues using the PlusIIs .....

Cheers Gaz

Gary,

I'll try that right now. I used to have that setup until one of the firmware updates supposedly addressed the 5DMKII issue. I''ll try it right now, thanks for the heads up

I suggest you upgrade all your units to FW version 5.0 and put it on AUTO for the camera setting. That is how all FOUR of my TT5's are set up. C1 and C2 are set to different fequencies. I can send you screen shots of how I have it set up. Just send me your email.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I spent a good hour working with PW tech support, which was top notch, and they are replacing my mini TT1 and giving me a new Flex TT5(I pay the difference - $20), but either way, they admitted that whatever my mini TT1 was doing was horribly wrong. It was basically working only if I aimed the mini TT1 directly at the TT5 in a line of sight.

Did you syne each speedlite and flex unit then sync them by taking shots with the camera it usually takes a couple of shots for everythign to sync up as described in the user manual and or videos.

Yes. My original problem was with my speedlights but then the exact same issue began happening with my Alien Bees.
